ok here's the deal. i see no problem with using marine sand except for the following:

i used to be 'into' aquariums... ive had salt water, freshwater, brackish, and alkali aquariums. typically there are 2 types of sand available at pet stores: live sand and treated sand YOU DO NOT WANT THE LIVE SAND!!!!! its full of salt and marine life. basically its beach sand someone has sifted and packaged for sale. you want treated, washed sand. i know a few people that have killed off there salt water aquariums by adding live sand to the tank... imagine what it will do to the root systems of your babies. even the treated sand should be flushed with water, dump it into a 5 gallon bucket and add a very slow running hose to flush the sand of any trace salts or impurities. the sand will sink to the bottom and the crap will float off as the water overflows.. let it run like that for a good 20 mins to remove any nastiness.. personally i think it s alot of trouble for a little sand, and id rather have the landscapers sand, its cheaper per pound and you get alot at once, years of supply so to speak.

Personally I would just go for the sand at home depot! Its worth the money b/c you'll be able to use it later! I hate those damn gnats :finger: Also make sure the sand isn't dyed!

go to the dunes or somewhere with some sand. lol steal it from a sandbox or playground. Rinse it with bleach water than with just water.
