Size matters? Ideal container sizes and spacing

I am re-visiting the SOG idea as well as going the other direction into big pots on an ebb and flow table. I usually use gallon pots and about one for every square foot, I am just wondering what is the most productive use of root space is. More small containers? Less bigger containers? Is there a golden ratio?

Many of my guys budget 1 liter a week or 1 us gallon a month the plant is with you, you ask yourself how long you want to do this then get the appropriate sized pot ...easy

After trying a SOG using 1 gal. smart pots, I came to the conclusion if I was to do it again, I would use 3 gal. square pots. I did not get the production I wanted out of the 1 gal. YMMV.

Soil or hydro? I'm assuming hydro.

Size your pots according to how long the plant is going to be in it, 1gal/month is a general rule but i believe geared towards soil grows. Square pots=more root volume/more usable space. I've seen people on this site flower trays of clones in party cups for 8 weeks that were fine because they got water/nutes when they needed it. Considering that 4" and 6" rockwool cubes are a norm for ebb and flow growing i don't think a hugh container is necessary.

Hdsog has lots of downs to it.High numbers, smaller nugs, and more work IMO
Best results thus far are 3 gal pots flipped at 20-25 inches.
Not ideal on raised flood tables but doable with trellace netting.
One gals are ok,but huge plants happen with just a little more veg.

My limited indoor experience has shown if the planter is wider than tall, the plant tends to stay on the short side. Taller planters tend to allow the plant to give a longer tap root resulting in a taller plant. This might help you decide size based on your style of growing, space, etc... As always, your mileage may vary.
