Small batch ice water hash

whats up roll it up crew. So I was watching a bunch of YouTube videos today and found a couple guys that were making small batch ice water hash. The process they used was a mason jar and straining through coffee filters. Has any of the Roll it Up gang used this technique. I have had a sandwich bag of trim for awhile and although not enough for butter or oil it seemed like the perfect amount for this. Any input would help greatly as this would be my first time running. Need to make good of my white widow scraps

I make a lot of Ice water hash. I use a 25 micron bag a 75 micron bag and 250 micron bag. It's very simple as you have seen on the videos. This is my 2 cents. I used to use a cake mixer to stir. however, I have found that mixing old school with a wooden stick gives me a "Higher" yeald. (in my dumb ass opinion) the machine blenders break the tricomes down so small that they slip through the 25. Micron Bag.

Thanks for the input, I never thought about the machines breaking down the tricomes that small.

I don't think those little washing machines break down the tricomes, I was talking about hand held cake mixers. However, funny story, long ago in a galaxy far away my buddy ordered one of those "Little" washing machines. I don't know what they cost now, but back then they were$500. We had only seen the picture. There were several of us local (legal) growers present when the delivery driver arrived.Between all of us we had about 50 lbs. of trim to process.Well, much to our chagrin a delivery truck arrived and did not wheel the machine out on a dolly. but handed it to my buddy in a small box.:( We all still chuckle about it.:) Anyway, ironically some friends are coming over and we are having a hash making party either today or tomorrow. I will post a real time demo and I'll do a run with a small amount ( I think you said you had a sandwich bag full) that's usually about an ounce, so you can see if it's worth it for you or not. Stay tuned!

That would be awesome and much appreciated. Thanks for the info and story

I'm sure you mentioned that you had already seen the videos so I'm going to gloss over basics and mention things that I have learned/learnt (i'm trying to write to an international audience LoL) over the years .First, is the bags themselves. Just to be clear, this is my second set of this style of bags. They are 5 gallon. In my opinion, I would not buy the little bags. In the future I will be purchasing All Mesh bags. As you can see the old bag has become cracked over time. I do however use the old bag to make guano tea. Although the table may look dirty in the photo; I assure you it's not. It is stained. Everything has been scrubbed with alcohol and also I have been running a blower to scrub the air. Honestly, if it weren't raining, I would be working outside. (less dust) Of course, we need some canabus. This is a very high quality trim. The bud registered at 24.66% Thc. There are still some small buds left over, so this should be good. You mentioned that you are only going to use about an ounce. That is what I will work with so you can get an estimate of how this will turn out for you. Also, I will separate the little buds. I realize that other trim is different than mine.

Well I thought I had posted this already. However, I'm having trouble liking things and my posts aren't posting. Let's try again. Here is the official hash-maker's uniform. I will not be enforcing the dress code today, but will in the future.LoL

Clean bags are essential. This is actually a very sticky operation. Advanced Hash stuff 201: Anytime there is water present around canabus there is the possibility of mold.
Next Time your trimming: at the end of your trim session leave an ample amount of keif/ plant matter, on the end of your clippers. Wrap the clippers in plastic and place in a cool dark place for a day or two. Spores will grow, or they won't. The clippers I use have a plastic tip that works for this purpose. I learned this trick by accident. I thought you should know. I clean my bags with regular alcohol. I don't put them in the washing machine. I'ts not for any other reason than when I mentioned it years ago, the O'l lady flipped out. I just don't mention it. Maybe somebody else knows about that. My next hash bags will be 35 gal and I'll be getting my own washing machine. I'm searching for an old school wringer washer. Anyway, you know the drill from here. If you don't Hit the You Tube and follow along. We all do it pretty much the same. Cannabis, Ice, H2o. Some folks pre-freeze, I don't . I plan to use a wooden spoon for mixing.

Well, I stirred the 15 minutes on or so off 10 on or so, then squeeze it out. I mentioned that I like the large bags better because I can get a better grip and they are just easier to work with. I always get more out of the 75m (yellow bag)The hash is always blonder and sweeter. On small pulls like this I usually mix it together. I'll put it in the press, weigh it, and post some picks. This is simple way I do it. I don't make the melt. I don't like it; it just melts away. At around 30-40 dollars you beat these bags. One more post to go, stay tuned.

I know what you are thinking, WTF... 5 grams! Well it's 5 grams wet. Even though it has been pressed it still contains a lot of moisture. It will cure up to about 1.5 grams. Actually, that is a little "higher" than usual. It seem to me that the larger batch I make, less the yield. Anyway, there ya go I hope this helps you make your decision.IMG_2640.JPG

If your catching resin in a 25 bag then I would either think your plants are premature or just not meant for making hash. If you like hash and you want to make good hash you should read this thread. https://www.rollitup.org/t/the-french-cannoli-hash-thread.648510/ I used to do the bubble and add it to my brownie mix or smoke it as is. But the hot bottle press is definitely the way to go because it keeps getting better with time. The trick is to blot it dry with a paper towel then chop it up as fine as possible and let it air dry for a week before you start hot bottle pressing. This way you wont end up with mold inside your hash ball. 7.5 minutes on each side usually does it. You will also need heavy duty plastic bags because the hot bottle can melt it, so its good to do a test before you press. The hot bottle is full of boiling water once you pour it in the temp will drop below boiling but should be close to 210 degrees. You may need to refill the bottle with hot water half way through if it cools off. This process decrboxylates the hash and brings out the terpene profile.

I have used the mason jar and coffee filter before. It's very inefficient but it does work and the end product is very green. It also takes a long time because the filter clogs easily. If you decide to give it a go do a couple runs with the material.

I prefer to use my grinder and catch the kief. Give the grinder a few taps and stir the grounds a bit. I'll dump the grounds into a bag and rerun it maybe 2 more times if I'm out of smoke. The biggest downside I've found is the grinder will need a good cleaning afterward. I press the kief into pucks about the size of an aspirin. Certainly not ideal but you do what needs to be done sometimes.

Check this thread out.https://www.rollitup.org/t/the-french-cannoli-hash-thread.648510/ You should use this or something similar
You can buy individual extraction bags for a reasonable price.
Started experimenting today. I'll be rolling my cannoli when the hash is out of the press. I have Blueberry and Cherry bomb on deck. I'm looking forward to hashing some of that. I'll be ordering a 5 bag after the holiday madness is over and there is some extra$. Until then I'll be using the handy dandy Acme Hash Press/ Water Extraction Kit. Those bags have been a lot of fun. Best $30. I ever spent. Anyway thanks for the link. I haven't upgraded my hash tech in a while, I've just been doing it the same old way for years. I have been concentrating (sorry about the pun) on co2/bho tech. Gota love You-Tube.:)

I have made quite a bit of ice water hash. I don't care for the hash made from dry trim or even dry bud for that matter. In my opinion you will get a much more amazing flavor if you take your fresh just harvested plant matter and put it in the freezer till it is completely frozen. Then you run your ice hash using some brand of bubble bags. I'm not really into separating each micron due to the fact I'm the only one smoking it lol. so I make sure to get all plant material with the first few bags and catch all the rest in the 25. Now to get really tasty ice water hash you take your pull as it gets almost dry and sieve it onto some wax paper and finish letting it dry for about an hour or so. Although you could smoke it 15 min after sieving it. Its better to let it dry till it just barely sticks together when using a card to scrape it up. If you leave it just barely sticky you can dab it and the flavor is amazing.

You get what you pay for. If you want top quality full melt bubble hash get quality extract bags.

Bubble bags, boldt bags or essential extract bags. Get all 8 bags!!!!

The cheaper bags are made of lower quality material that flake off into your hash. Just after a few washes. Some the dye bleeds out.

Use Ro or distilled water and make your own ice with same water. Make sure the water is below 40 degrees. And the room is 60 degrees or below. Heat and humidity / moisture is the enemy of trichomes.

You want more water than ice. As so to be gentle

First do a pre rinse . Dunking the work bag with material in the bag, in the cold water for 30 seconds. This removes any particulates on the material. Makes for better hash discard that water and fill the machine or buckets with new water and ice. Use new water and ice each wash. You don't want to reintroduce any contaminants back into the hash.

Then before running soak fresh frozen for 5 min . Dry for 20 min. As long of you planning on running dry. Cure it for a couple months first so the terpenes polymerize.

Get a portable washing machine. Wash for 5 min with fresh frozen and 3 min for dry then drain right away.

If you can't afford one just use a wooden spoon and stir by hand. Then just put the work bag in one bucket. And all the other bags in another bucket.

Be very gentle. That is the key. If you are too rough you will get a bunch of plant matter in your hash .

Wash fresh frozen for 5 min. Each wash. Dry trim for 3 min.

Once you have drained each bag. Place one bag in the bucket. Pull the screen up then use a pump sprayer and spray the trichomes with ro water to clean the trichomes. Then wick some moisture out. Repeat with each bag. This removes any macro plant matter and particulates and chlorophyll.

Then place the patties on the blotting screen on a towel and place either in wood drawer, pizza box, wine cooler fridge or a cold room. Below 60 degrees. Dry for 6 hours. Place patties in the freezer for an hour. Take out microplane ( grate) patties over raw parchment paper on baking sheets. Then dry for a week in either a wood drawer, pizza box in a cold room or wine cooler fridge . To prevent oxidation. And keep it full melt. Then cure in the same environment for 5 weeks. Then it will remain stable and not cake out

Here is some gorilla glue / Mt rainier bubble hash ice wax I made last 2 weeks ago.

IMG_20151217_052549.jpg

Then too dab press between parchment with a hair straighter or with dome to heat up with a torch.

IMG_20151213_144555.jpg

Then with the other bags that are normally trash like the 25u , 160u, 190u, 220u

You can press into rosin
