All growers should be aware of the minute spores that occur in tobacco —these spores are called tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). They are in cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.
For the above reason, pipe smokers and people who roll their own cigarettes should not be allowed to touch anything in the grow area. Keep in mind that all smokers represent a hazard to a marijuana cultivation centre :p

What actual damage does it do to the plant?

I'm a smoker and want to grow my own tobacco as well, so I'm just wondering about the potential problems?

My friends dad grows his own, and smokes in the house as well...but his is some of the strongest i've ever smoked.

What damage does it actually do?

It infects plants and can give their leaves a discoloured and mottled effect. I'm not sure of the damage this does to the plant, perhaps it stunts growth or even kills leaves, but it isn't present in all tobacco plants.

They do however suffer from it more than most plants for one reason or another, so you should avoid tobacco coming into contact with your precious plants purely as a precautionary measure. You might be fine, then again you might wake up to find pretty patterns all over your leaves so it's best to avoid.
