Noteworthy findings:

*Medical cannabis use is higher than average among Blacks and Native Americans, lower among Latinos and Asians.

*73% of patients are male.

*Use is heaviest in the 25-44 year age group.

*Leading indications:

82.6% for pain

70.7% to improve sleep

55% for “relaxation”

41% for muscle spasms

41% for headaches

38% for anxiety

28% for nausea

26% for depression

51% use as a substitute for prescription medication (showing that medical cannabis may offer significant health cost savings)

Medical cannabis users report significantly lower alcohol & cocaine use than the average population, supporting the substitution theory that more cannabis use may lead to less abuse of other drugs.

Let's stop lying to ourselves... And many will hate me for saying this, but it's true. Your facts indicate the majority of users are young to middle-aged people. This age bracket traditionally is one of the healthiest. Why is it that they now are one of the largest brackets for medical cannabis consumption? BECAUSE IT'S A JOKE. YES, cannabis helps many people with debilitating illnesses, but I would safely assume there are a lot of people who get medical cards for the abundantly obvious reason: it makes it legal for you. Why can't we just legalize and stop parading this bullshit about medical? I do believe cannabis is a viable, beneficial medicine, however, I think too many resources are focused towards the medical movement, and not the legalization movement.

That's probably very true, but I can't help but wonder if the medical movement is putting off legalization. I mean, is it right we have to, (and let's be honest again), lie and/or embellish physical ailments to smoke fucking weed? I know many completely healthy people with medical cards. How is that possible you say? Well, other than the few people here with cancer/aids/severe rheumatoid arthritis/m.s./etc, the rest are a great example. Again, I support medical for people with serious needs, however, it upsets me that so much money and what not is diverted to this and not full legalization.

i agree with you 100% its pretty ridiculous....

if ppl werent so afraid of change--if someone had the balls to walk up and say "hey, maybe we were wrong"-- the dream of legalization and better regulation would be that much closer.....but dont count on that.

I don't think the medical movement is putting off legalization. The feds and the hates call bullshit on there being any medicinal value in cannabis. This forces cannabis to stay in the main stream. Makes people uncomfortable, but that's what we need right now! If it weren't for the medical side of it, I don't think states would have pushed for decriminilization.

as long as medical survives it means you can all still have hope that legalization will happen....

When the legalization movement of the '70s fell on it's face everyone pretty much just went to the medical argument. Which I don't disagree with, but let's face it, it's a front.

When corporate giants like Merck figure out a way to make money on it I promise you it will be legal in the lower 48

yeah right, they'll just do what they did with opium poppies... have 49 thousand acres of it grown in tasmania austrailia . . . . . why the fuck would they grow it here when they can contract someone else from another country to do it cheaper?

capitalism: you all picked it ;)

It will be legal for THEM, not US. When they have it the way they want, we loose. I don't like capitalism as it stands now. There's no honor; it's been slowly dying for 100 years, and didn't even work all that well to start with.

the medical mumbo jumbo has gotten us this far. but its just a way for our government and many american people to stomach a slight lift on this ridiculous prohibition. Stop kidding yourselves if you think the 25-44 in california all have debilitating illness, better its just a way to buy legal buds at competitive prices...wish i could be so lucky

The ease of getting a card for a technically legitimate reason (as in things that are more mental and less physical) just shows how many people could and would benefit from legalization. I KNOW I would, because I have insomnia.
