Title says it all. Attic space. Temps are fucking 87 degrees right now bringing in air from outside that is 55 degrees!? I'm livid. I have tried several arrangements. What the fuck is the deal with these cfl? Tips for dealing with heat? I have a 450 watt hps in the room right next to it with temps at 74!!!! WTF. Are t5s that much cooler? Probably wasting my time even asking but maybe some one has a trick I've never heard of. Intake is 50 cfm, Outtake is 50 cfm and the box is about 8 cf. I'm thinking I need to get an inline fan and some glass to seal the bulbs behind - more fucking work - been at it for a year trying different things so you can understand how much it sucks trying something new expecting it to fail - it's almost a waste of time. Sorry, I'm so frustrated right now!! bongsmilie :joint: bongsmilie :joint: ... ... ...

How many cfl's are you running? Each cfl has its own little built-in ballast which makes for alot of heat if you have a bunch of them running. You would certainly be happier with T5's - I was when I switched years back. IDK how much cooler your space would be but you will def see it in your plants.

Cfls create more heat then most people think.
I had 8 in a small area and the temps got crazy hot fast.
How many are you using in your space?
I would try bumping up the fan taking in the cooler air.
The heat rises naturally so is the exhaust exiting out the top?
It would be easier for someone to try to help if you could give more details.
Either way dont give up theres lots of people out there that will gladly give advice

what the ppl said is right

my temp gun on the CFL next to me is 162 F dead center and 142 off to the side ......this room now is 62
the number of CFLs u have the heat increases after about 8 it is time to change over

your a attic your best choice is to change for LED .....they will get u the power and coverage with less heat then 3/4 cfls would make
http://www.ledzeal.com/p44.html
talk to kevin he worked with me ........order from them they are the makers not a retail so the price diff is huge even after fedex shipping (i love the control it offers i can experiment with different settings )

2nd thing is u need to section off a smaller area to grow in ........poly wrap will work with some good tape ..........instead of cooling the whole area u are only doing what u need now so u can test and see what it is after this .........if u need more then u can try increase the intake and exhaust CFMs along with adding a moving fan or 2 inside the area

if that does not work u will need to invest in a mini-split ac unit and cool the area .......or install barn fans to suck in one side and blow out the other to lower the whole attics temp down( u can get ones that are solar powered so the cost of running them is nothing they will only work in the day time during the hottest parts of the day ) paint the roof white the black is absorbing the heat of the day (never understood why black )

are you aggressively cooling the bulbs (ballasts at the base of each) or just the passive air flow? also i think the out flow should be just a touch higher than the intake fan.... id try targeting the bulbs w/ some small fans, n if that dont do the trick, scrap CFLs... even LEDs may be a challenge, both have that immense heat coming off from dropping that 120v down.

If ur HID room is rockin healthy, it may be showing you the yellow brick road....

I run up to 6 CFL's 23watt box is 2x2 ft and 4 ft tall, just a 4 inch desk fan at the top of the box pulling air out, with another blowing some-what across the top aimed down a bit, also blows air pass the CFL's completely home made setup, using that foil/bubble wrap insulation on the insides, with zero air movement and all 6 bulbs on, can excess 95+ degrees F, with both fans on, 1 pulling air out top and other circulating air, temp stays about 80.

if your space is what i think 2x2x2ft box? is this hydro or soil? is there anything reflective on the inside? type and number of bulbs in there,

Don't worry about putting covers for cfl/fluoro lights with a box that small size, i've done full veg so far, my first grow, with CFL and hydro, Just finished a 4'wide 2' deep 4ft tall for my flower/budding stage which i'm still working on lighting.

if your intake air is really 55 degrees there has to be something wrong to have a 30 degree jump to exhaust temp, my intake air is usually around 70-75ish and ambient temp is normally around 80, intake from room and spitting outside.

I had the same issue when I ran 20 CFL inside a 6x3x6 box. I went with CFL because I was worried about heat. First grow foxtailed bad... Winter grow wasn't so bad because the basement wall helped keep it cooler. But then the next summer grow was turning to poo again so I invested in LED. Temps are manageable but overall I am not impressed with LED. Been running this Supernova 270 for almost a year now and though it yields better than the CLF set up I am seriously considering an air cooled HPS. Then this LED will be for veg.

One thing I use to help take advantage of high heat is CO2.
