SOG Questions

For about the last week I've been debating between whether to SCROG or SOG. At first the grow tent I had was more SCROG friendly, but now that I managed to score a tent that has both a veg. and flowering chamber I've decided that I'd like to try my hand at a perpetual SOG. I understand the basic fundamentals of it, but one area I can't get a clear cut answer on is the appropriate pot size.

The tent I'll be growing in is somewhat small, 3' x 3'. I'll be using coco coir as my growing medium and the strain will be OG Kush. Any thoughts on the pot size and number I should go with to fill this space? I plan on using Smart Pots to hopefully maximize what space I do have.

My opinion with a grain of salt.
SOG should be 4 plants per sq ft. meaning you should have 3 x 3 x 4 = 36 plants. While doable, tents are hard to circulate air when PACKED with plants so bud rot is more of a concern (just what I have found, others may be different). When SOG is utilized in a larger room its easier to have fans at multiple angles to keep air moving. You have to defoliate/lollipop in a 4 plant per sq ft garden. That is another topic you must practice and adjust as researching it only makes for arguments.

SOG is by the far the fastest, highest yielding way to grow once you get it down, but you need a lot of clones that are identical in all aspects, its also a lot of work to lollipop every 2-3 weeks to keep them from over growing the area. Strain has a HUGE impact on this style of growing. I personally do not recommend an OG for this method

For pot size really any thing that is only a 6"W x6"L foot print. I have used 1 gallon Root Pouches of coco (fabric pot) which turned out good but Rockwool seems to be better geared to SOG. Coco just makes a mess of things no matter how much you clean.

If I was in your situation I would do a Scrog in min 7 gallon fabric pot of coco, they are more fun to watch grow and less of a mess than SOG. This method also teaches you about pulling leaves off under the screen that are not getting light. That then applies to SOG, good lessons from one to the other. I Enjoy both methods depending on strain and time of year.

Being that you are growing an "OG" which to my understanding tends to be stretchy I think a Scrog is your best option.
Hope my opinion helps you decide what works BEST FOR YOU!

Have a good day! bongsmilie

SOG. It's just a lot faster and easier. I use 12 plants per 1/2 sq m cab, so for 3 x 3 25 would be good. I top and prune as necessary in veg for an even and filled out canopy. 25 plants will fill out much faster than 5, for instance. Sure, the plant count is higher, if you're worried about that. That's the choice you have to make.
