Soil is a Mess

So I'm into my 1st grow. I'm finding that soil can be quite a mess. My plants are about a week old. Could I transplant in to a hyrdo system? and would rockwool still work as a media?

my thinking would be you could but it would be quite a shock. if it hasn't developed a strong root system (just taproot) then i'd do it - otherwise i would be hesitant. rockwool is a fine hydro medium. though i think (might want to look this up) you should soak the rockwool in properly pHed water before use.

Yeah they seam to be pretty healthy in the soil in about two weeks I was gonna switch to fox farm soil, but then I got to wondering about hydro. I think I will just stick with the soil until I order some new seeds. Soil is just such a mess. I didn't take that into mind when I stated newbie mistake I guess.

Yeah thanks for the heads up on that thread. He/She seemed very pleased. It seems like it would be kinda unheathly for the lil ladies, and I'm still kind of a noobie so I don't really want to risk it.

Umm i have 13 5gal pots of soil and its not messy in the least bit. If you do it right then its not going to be messy. Im really trying to think hard here how it could be messy? Are you playing around in the dirt or what? All you should be doing is watering them and i dont see how that can be messy. I bet you dont have anything on the bottom such as rocks or sand to keep the soil from coming out when you water huh? Or plastic trays? We have ours in a shed and i brought a broom cause i thought we would need it. Havent used it once and there is absolutely NO dirt on the floor. I did sweep it out the first day to get sawdust out. Please explain how its so messy. What are you doing man, im trying to think of every possible angle it could be mess. Please explain.

Edit: Dirtyal i just read you post after i posted mine and i couldnt agree more. What are you doing that is so messy man? Just water them...that should be throwing dirt everywhere.

I found when I mixed the nutes up for the soil having to lay down plastic mix it up(I'm sure theirs some kinda of tool for but I don't have one) It just got messy. Maybe its just me. Dirt doesn't fall out of the pot or anything. I'm also thinking of when I transplant. Having to remove them from the pot. Discard the old soil. Its seems like it could be kinda messy, next to using a hydro system. Maybe I'm wrong as I stated in the post above I'm just new to this and it seems like a hydro system would be cleaner.

I could not find a local grow shop so I could not find any Fox farm (I have found the local grow shop about days after I planted my seeds), and I didn't want to use just any potting soil. So I put a mix of soil, perlite and vermiculite. I should of done it in a big bucket thinking back on it.

I must say I consider myself a hydro guy, but soil is.....I guess the word to explain it is genuine. I went with the foxfarm soil, and I must say I'm pretty impressed with the results. Disposal can become a problem though.

I guess if you are in the city or in an apartment and cant mix everything up out in the open it might become troublesome. But we only transplanted once and sure theres a little mess but nothing major. As far as nutes its all liquid so you just mix it in gal jugs or like we do in a 5gal gas can then pour it into jugs. This way is MUCH easier cause you can test the ph and everything all at once instead of each jug like we were doing before. But yeah, dont mix stuff on the floor man. At least get a garbage bag or something and mix it in there. I can just see you having all kinds of dirt on the floor mixing it, haha too funny. But dont worry man, this is your first time and mine too. But honestly i think its a better idea to get to know how this stuff works before going hydro. I mean just think, with hydro you are going to have to empty a big resevoir like every 2 weeks, you got all those pumps and stuff that can go out, root rot is more likely, etc etc etc. Each has their pros and cons and one isnt better than the other. As for the guy that used foxfarm soil you are damn right thats good stuff! We use the ocean forest mix and my god this stuff is rich. Its so dark and fluffy. It has EVERYTHING in it. Im pretty convinced you could just use this soil and no nutes at all and get impressive results. Anyways, let us know how it goes man. Im sure youll get it figured out and get some huge buds. I hope so!
