check out Subcool's super soil here on this site. The man knows what he's doing. It's stickied in the organics section but here is the link anyways.

i'll pass on a 'dirt' cheap mix that has worked well for me, very simple
MG Organic Garden Soil - about $7 for a cubic foot from your local lowes
to each gallon of soil, 1 tbsp of MG Organic Bone Meal(6-9-0), and 1 tbsp of dolomite
mix in 15% of perlite
a sack of the MG bone meal is maybe 6/7$ and the dolomite is about $5, perlite is less than $10
these will go a very long way, they will last for a number of grows
MG Organic soil does bring fungus gnats with it, more of an annoyance, but they can be gotten rid of by lightly baking the soil

Subcool uses Blood meal and Bone meal in his mix. I live in a apartment and I don't trust mixing that shit indoors..that mix is cool if you live in the country with a big backyard...but when you live in a 5th floor apartment...fucking around with a mix like that is dangerous to ones health.

I'll pass on that Subcool mix, LoL..

You should were a mask mixing these mixes regardless where you live at. I always were mine and I have a few more ingredients than Sub and then I dont use somethings he does. Good Luck

I love the way you guys take a post and blindly interpret it. Too each his or her own. Also I have things in my mix that I dont care to breathe friend.

Yes but difference between being outside and inside is that once you are done you can take the mask off when working outside. If you live in a apartment, you can open a window but that stuff will still be floating around sometime afterwards. I am not about to keep a mask on for 3 hours until the dust and fine particles from blood and bone meal clear out of my apartment. Besides I don't live alone. I have a significant other...and her health is also my concern...so what do you suggest?? Sitting around with mask on our faces for 2 hours after I mix a soil...Blood and Bone meal can be bad to breath in..I don't take chances with my health..lol.

Dude when you live in a 5th floor apartment in an Urban area there are things that one just can't do..I accept that..but that's ok..there are other options for Nitrogen besides Blood and Bone meal...

LOL...well some people mountain climb without a safety rope...doesn't mean I am going to do it. Blood Meal is blood from some animal (unknown source) that you don't even know. You don't know how healthy that animal was or what diseases it had. I would rather not chance breathing it in.

Yes i use a 5 gallon bucket. Use 5 parts. I make lines on bucket then mix up in a big plastic bag.. I have a grow journal going on here look me up. Been using this mix for long time just soaked for 24 hrs and plant. It drains very well and i leach it every 4 weeks to get rid of salt build up from nutes.
