Solatube

I have a feeling you would need MANY of those to get anywhere near actual sunlight.

If the sun were to = 1000WHps, then those solatubes would be like CFL's; you'd need too many to get the same results.

maybe an industrial sized Solatube would get the job done. Unless there was something filtering the light wouldn't it carry the same Lumens and Penetration as it does outside.

Plants can grow underneath a Solatube.

1 10" Solatube is roughly equivalent to 3,000 lumens and 1 14" is roughly equivalent to 5,000 to 6,000 lumens. Ive seen people put this over fish tanks as well where they are trying to get light for plants in the tanks.

The 21" Solatube is almost equivalent to 12,000 lumens.. Im sure you could grow something underneath that ;)

Yes. Solatube can bring in almost the equivalent of outside light. Its material on the inside of the tubing is almost 100% reflective, so whatever light is outside on the roof it can bring in to the home. Dont mistake some "copycat" brands with Solatube. You might have seen the cheapie Home Depot brand installed..not very good.

Of course on a cloudy rainy day, its not going to be bright but neither is it outside.

If you havent seen them installed, go visit one of their dealers that have them installed.
