Well day before yesterday my 4 inch vortex that was cooling my 2 600W lights kicked the bucket. Couldn't wait the 7-10 days obviously for a new one so i had to go ghetto!!

Picked up a 10 inch 524 CFM Can Fan from the local nursery (The only place in town that had inline fans) for $70. Got it home and and wondered how the hell i was going to go from 10 inch to 4 inch  So made a cardboard cone and Tuck Taped the hell out of it.

I know i'm losing alot of CFM doing that but sometimes these things have to be done. Looks like it actually going to do a much better job than that 4 inch vortex.

No idea on the CFM at the end of the run but it should be more than that vortex. Have to wait until lights on time to install it. Last night the girls were fed by a 60W generic bulb i'm sure they love me for it :-P

Glad you guys like it :bigjoint: Have it running now and am impressed it is actually a little quieter than the vortex. Maybe Tuck tape has some sound dampening built in

It is keeping the light cooler forsure. But now i realize i have some serious air leakage around the edges of the glass...enough that some of the plants are moving pretty good.

Can;t figure out how to seal them up as the glass needs to be able to slide out when i change bulbs. Only thing i can think of is duct tape but i don't want to put it that close to the light even if it only gets warm not to mention the glue it will leave on the glass.

Any ideas?

I just love grow room engineering! Good job.

What type of reflector do you have? There should be a rubber gasket going around the perimeter of the glass cover. Maybe go and get a larger one. The rubber strips used to hold screening in frames and screen doors has different diameters. Maybe put a bead of caulk in the area where it fits into the reflector itself.

Was wondering who would comment on that first

We just moved in so things are a little messy :bigjoint:

Looks good, I love a good Macgyver.
Keep in mind if you are going to keep this for awhile by making a fan designed for a 10" duct push air through a 4" duct you are going to make that fan work extra hard & are going to burn it out faster. On the other hand that air should be moving through the 4" duct hella fast.
Could a rubber or foam gasket/ strip work for sealing the air leaks?

your local hardware store should have some aluminum ducting tape in the HVAC section, its like tinfoil w/ a sticky back on it.heat wont bother it.

If i can find some thin enough stripping i will try that. The grooves that the glass slides in don't leave alot of clearance. If that fails maybe i'll try some of that ducting tape. Thanks for the ideas +reps ;)

Edit: Missed 1 post. Yeah i expect pushing that air into a 4 inch line will most likely burn the fan out quicker than normal. Hopefully it lasts 4-5 months. I plan on really redoing the entire room in the next 4-5 months and get it setup how i like. I was much too rushed this time around. :)

couldn't you put you vortex on a dim switch so you won't burn it out?

The vortex is already hooped :P The 10 inch can fan pretty much needs to run fullout 24/7 because right now it is also doubling as a partial exhaust for the room ;)
