Sour Kush mother selection

Woot woot all.
Since Im bringing in new genetics I figured now was as good time as ever to start some kind of journal!

I won't promise lots of pictures or anything cause I suck with a camera, couldnt even get seed pics off of my real camera and had to fall back onto the phone.

Here we go!

Ordered a 13 pack of sour kush from the DNA reserva line, now without getting into the name ripping debate the DNA sour kush is a reverse engineered strain (if you can call it that), the "real" headband aka sour kush is a clone only so this is the DNA version of said strain. I belive the parentage is a back crossed OG kush breed into ECSD (east coast sour diesel).

As you can see I did grab some other stuff but thats for summer, I want to get the sour kush running ASAP so Im giving myself 3 months to get the mother selection process over and done with.

Seeds from Attitude, came in 2 weeks flat from across the pond. No issues at all, all seeds (other then the freebees) looked great and really healthy

I really like the Reserva packaging, top notch.

All the sour kush seeds looked extremly healthy, nice size and colors.

Now I have not popped beans well.....ever pretty much.
So needless to say I'm feeling a little trepidation over wasting time killing beans so to help me along I grabbed some Root Riot Cubes to use as the seed starting material.

I hate rockwool and am to impatient to wait for a seed to break ground to know whats up so I decided the root riots would make things easier for me and take some of the guess work out.

Day 1 - Dropped 5 Sour Kush beans into about 2 inches of water in a cup.
Day 2 - seeds are all sank but none cracked yet.
Day 3 - ALL seeds start to show their root, over the cource of the day all of them make it into their cubes for the first time after showing a short root and obviously being cracked.
Day 4 - All seeds are now sitting in cubes.
Day 5 - half the seeds have hit ground level, one of them seems a little ahead of the others and I had to help get him out of his seed coat.
Day 6 (today) - All of the beans have broke surface. had to knock the shell off of two more beaners but otherwise they are mostly unfolded into their first two leaves!
(pics comming).

Their so cute!
The main root has shot out of the riot cube on most of them so I will probably get them into my youngling dirt mix by tomorrow.

Looking good

This guys root came out a little sideways so he's having some issues with "up" right now. If he has not broke ground by this afternoon Im going to lend him a hand.

I got to watch him unfold, it was pretty neat.

After grabbing these shots last night I transplanted them into my youngling mix (Per Gallon of recyled BASE mix - 4 cups EWC, 4 tsp – Kelp Meal, 4 tsp – Calimatic/Dolimatic Lime) took a look this morning and theve taken on a nice darker green color. Threw some White Shark onto the riot cubes before palnting planning them and now just waiting about 2 weeks to transplant into the more permanent dirt mix. The guy still seeded is cracked but the root came out kind of on the side of the seed so its having a hard time figuring up and down out, when I get home if it has not figured itself out Im going to get a toothpick in there and see if I cant right it.

No real updates, the 4 are doing great.
The guy having a problem finding his way is still at it, hes got the direction down but the orintation is still off. He looks healthy but I couldnt get him right without tearing the root out of the cube so I pulled some material away so hopfully he can turn himself right today.

So I got a little impatient and ended up breaking the root off of the straggler while inspecting it. Whoops.
Ah well the other four are doing there thing quite well. If I was Pheno hunting Id be a little upset but Im just going for a strong mother here so im not too upset.
80% germ rate for a first timer, not too bad.

Nice start. But it looks like to me some are showing signs of nute burn.. Notice the yellowing around the leaves? Otherwise keep up the good work and Happy Growing!

Not at all. They are in my youngling mix (see dirt thread) and have been given nothing but H2O for over two weeks now. There are no nutes in that dirt, just EWC.

Sorry guys, kinda let the journal go.
Well here we are
Its Feb 21 - and we are 41 days since breaking ground.
Ill try and get new images up but its been a trip.
I recently transplanted them all out of their initial quart containers and transplanted into my actual dirt mix 2 days ago, they had gotten VERY root bound :-(
Two of them started to sag from it but perked up a few hours after the transplant.

I think what was pointed out as burn was actually a definicency (probably micro...iron?) that pattern continued until the transplant, all new growth looks perfect.

Hoping we can sex them really soon, the growth is still symetrical but the twin calyx are their now, just waiting for the sexing to start.

If I where to guess Id say A and C are females and B and D are males. B and D are more vertical growers compared to A and C and are between 1 and 2 inches taller and the branching is not as horizontal.

Update:
All plants have shown sex.
B turned out male and has been culled. A, C & D are all strong females, 3/4 not bad! Better then I though, I really only planned for two females.
Think I have two pheno's here.

A & C are good looking and showing indica growth patterns (low to ground, think branching, little stretch) while D is looking pretty sativa (much taller growth, larger spacing between nodes, big stretch). D is about 1.5 times the height of the other two. I actually topped it two nodes further down then A & C to keep the heghts more uniform.

I gotta say I dont like the growth pattern on D, its looking alot like my LemonG which is a beast plant and finishes flower at like 5 foot after only a 4 weeks veg time, I dont really have room for another one like that. Unless the clones put out some absolutly killer stuff compared to the others its on the chopping block. A & C are looking mostly the same so I think its going to come down to yields on which one of those becomes the new mom, unless D comes up with something sick.
Planning on taking the first gen clones from the three later this week. Going to take 4 from each with the expectation of only keeping two of each for flower testing.
