stem soggy 1" below soil

Hi,
I wrote to this forum earlier about a problem with the sides of leaves turning yellow and then gradually the plant starts to die. I thought it was a phosphorus problem so I changed the soil about the 3rd week into vegetative cycle.
It seemed to help going to new soil but any of the plants that showed damage have eventually died. Lost 1/3 of them.
I just noticed tonight on one that was doing fairly good started to yellow about 1 week agao and tonight it is all wilted and dieing. I dug about 1" to 1 1 /2 " below the soil at the stem and found the stem very moist and I could easily peel away at the stock. It was soft and a bit mushy.
What is that? I can't see any bugs unless they are very small and into the soil. I will have a better look in the daytime tomorrow.

I have been fighting this for 8 weeks now.
Any ideas please!!

REALLY? REALLY? If your digging into the soil your getting to the part where the stock from above the soil meets the root system dont fuck with it, unless theres mold then your plant is in trouble.

No this one was dieing so I just wanted to look. Most stems are a dry stem right on down to the roots. But this was a bit mushy feeling. Soft and you could see the white material under the skin of the stem and it was really soft and mushy like I said.No mold I see. I have looked at the stems before when harvesting and nothing looked like that.

I am having the same problem. I have a few Lowryder X AK47s in a hydro box and the stems have a white film covering them about an inch up the stem. Its a spotty white furry moist growth I think thats covering it. If you have heard anything please inform.....

Is it root rot. Are you watering it too much causing to to start rotting? Can you post a picture of it or did you get rid of it already?

It is root rot. I found out yesterday. I have started the repair. I haven't really over watered but it was a combo of a hot summer and water.
Thanks

that sounds more like mold than root rot. I went to the local hydroponics store and picked up some stuff for root rot. Unfortunately it did not have a label on it ( as I got the small pakages instead of the larger bottle) but it is working.

I would not just leave them with a hope and a prayer as you need something to get rid of the mold. I read about mold in one of the threads that carry a lot of preventative maintenance columns.
Keep looking for it as you need to apply something to help them to fight the mold spores.
