I'm now in a situation where I can't grow plants in my home to transplant them outdoors later. So would it be a bad idea to plant the seeds straight outdoors? I'll provide some vire mesh to keep the birds away.

I personally don't see a problem as long as you are using good well aerated soil(the natural soil in my area has A LOT of clay in it making it horrible for seedlings).
I would probably dig a little hole, fill it up with some purchased/homemade soilmix and then plant the seed in that. As long as the seedlings are surrounded by wire for protection, they should make it.

Birds, rabbits and other animals can fuck over you grow. Just cover the seedlings with a mesh high enough not to touch plants, you can take the mesh off when the plant is like 2 feet high. Tho it's not obligatory and you'll be ok w/o the mesh. Probably.
