Rep to ya mugan, I have to for a beekeeper. You've got balls. I got some bee sting therapy for my back one time - it was a fucking trip but they work pretty damn good. It really helped with opiate withdrawals and pain. I was trippin' 'cause I was sooo high from the Gold a few years ago - it really bugged me out - haha -bees.

we pull weeds on out hands and knees. also to prevent alot of weeding we use weed cloth and mulch alot, i like mulch more as it does not need placed down and tore up every year.
thats cool you guys have bees as well. we had like 5 hives of honey bees on the farm and 1 hive a year disappears for some reason. i think were down to 2 colonies.
do you extraxt the honey? i love the end of summer as we get alot of honey

i remember that weed cloth , its used a lot in landscaping too right ? i have been looking for it here with no luck :( . that thit would save my life , or my knees anyway and ad love to use it in the front of the house on the flower patches so it stays presentable .

Hey folks. You know what is better than weed cloth ? Old carpet. My whole garden is covered in old carpet and it is FREE !! Go to a carpet store and ask for it. If they don't have any there just talk to the installers. It is better than weed barrier ever thought about. Anywhere you want a plant you make an X and tuck the little flaps under. Strawberries are easier to control, but if you don't cut the runners they will eventually root right through the carpet. As to the original question, I have both types of berries and they all run like crazy if you let them.

it does wrok good but it is spendy to buy new, also a pain in the but kinda.

i saw the carpet idea above and that to would work but carpet usally has un wanted chemicals in it so if your organic i would not use it, a substutute to carpet should be card board, holds weeds at bay, it is free, light, worms love it and theri is no need to pick it up at the end of the season just let it become one with the dirt

I also heard of laying down some news papers works good, but I don't think it will be better then the weed cloth. And carpet I wouldn't use because of the above reasons and all the bacteria and dirty crap it holds, you never know it could infect your garden with some sort of disease.

If carpet had all these bad chemicals in it, do you think it would be approved to be inside family dwellings ?????????

The last time I checked, my garden was growing in "dirt" I don't think dirt from a carpet makes much difference.

I have been using it for several years with great success and every year I add another 15X15 square.

Lastly you say you never know if it could infect your garden.......
My response to that is : You'll never know unless you try.... which I have......Don't be afraid to try new things !

Edit: If I pull up a peice of carpet, you should see all the worms under it. They are great for the soil and if there were all of these bad things that yous mention, I doubt that they would be thriving under there.

carpet is like clothes they have preservatives in it, dyes, and chemicals that they use to make the carpet stain and water resistant. im not saying it doesn't work im saying theri is better alternitves, the used carpet could have been in a meth house that is now full of traces of meth, it could have also been from some nasty house that cats and dogs piss and shit on and now in a garden.
not saying it is this but always what could happen.

im not arguing or anything either just my opinions.
back to the berries.

im spraying all mine down today with neem as i have aphids in the GH. need to get them ready to sell

Not to argue, just a friendly debate...

As far as better ? the carpet is free and lasts a long time. Mostly nylon.

These dyes and chemicals are approved to be in family dwellings where we run around barefoot and run vacuum cleaners over and more importantly share the air with. I can't believe that you don't worry about living with all these "dangerous things" in your house, but trip on it being out by your plants.

As far as piss and shit... Peolpe use manure all the time in their gardens. I don't think a trace of dried dog piss would harm your plants in any way,lol. Some of the stuff people throw out is like brand new. They are just wanting a change. I put down better looking stuff than a lot of rentals have in them. :peace:

Lol who knew carpet could be a touchy topic, Now I see both points but I think it boils down to like Gyro said, if you try it and it works then do it. if it dont work for you then try something new, I personaly wouldnt lay old carpet down for a number of reasons. The main one for me is

Yes this is true but I don't water my carpets everyday, the new stuff is made to be safer then old stuff but their also intended to keep dry and clean indoors, not moist and in dirt outdoors. If you get a major flood in your house and all you carpets are soaked, well guess what you can try to dry em out or you'll be getting a lot more carpet for the garden (if thats what you use).

This being said I have seen people using outdoor carpeting like astro turf or that fake green stuff which is for outdoor use it looks like it works great. I think anything that will breath and block out the sun so that only the plants you want to live you let poke through will work.

Sorry guys had to throw in my 2, again lol Friendly debate and it's bringing up many good points which in the end we might find some totally out of left field solution no one ever thought of.

I got 1500 for my mothers last year when she had problems, the damn things are on a never ending mission for pests and water drops. Whenever they got them all they would just eventually leave, or die which ever came first. The trick is to keep em in your freezer and only take out what you think you'll need for the amount of pests you have. Or just let em all go at once they're only 3 bucks for 300, I also want to try raising praying mantises eventually dont seem that dificult you just need to find a non canibal species. A lot of people keep these as pets they're pretty neat and something I'm going to do when my sons are old enough to understand the growing process, some can even live in mason jar size container.

i always use lady bugs and mantises in the summer. but it is just to dam cooled here for them here right now, and my GH is not heated so they would just freeze, the neem uselly takes care of them i just got lazy for awhile.

carpet, does not break down at all, non biodegradable, it will always have the chems in it specially if it is older, i wont be surprised if theri wasnt formaldehyde in it. and shit and piss from animals that eat meats should never be used unless composted very hot to be safe.
i didnt say it doesnt work man, just saying theri is still better alternatives.

i always do some comp thread for the veggies, i dont think the one i made last year kept going though, its really hard to judge every ones gardens with out being theri and tasting every thing.

i do new stuff every time i do a garden. im going to use straw as mulch this year, last year i didnt use any mulch or cloth for weeds as i got all my dirt new so no weeds grew, this new plot had alot of grass and wild strawberries growing before i turned the soil.

I have been gardening for years and have tried just about everything that I have read or heard about. Then when I had purchased new carpet for my mothers house, I had ripped all the old out and was going to take it to the dump when it occured to me to give it a try. I wanted to expand my existing garden at the time so I mowed the grass as close as I could and pinned it down and put landscape timbers all around. I did not even till it up. When I want to transplant a seedling, I cut an X in the carpet. Then I use a bulb planter to pull a plug of dirt out. I put a tablespoon of Osmocote fertilizer in the hole. I mix another tablespoon of Osmocote into a bowl with the dirt from the hole for backfill around my seedlings. Since it worked so well I added a few more squares over the next few years. I am convinced it keeps the bugs down too. The worms love it under there and help the soil. Most people ask me how do you till it then ? There is no tilling. It is the easiest thing to do and it conserves water too. I water it a little every other day and the carpet lets it go right through unlike plastic, but keeps it from evaporating off. I wish I had tried this years ago. The only other thing you have to do is pick produce !

i hate weeds but this time of year is great for me cuz its so hot any thing that don't get water dies so the sun is like a nuke for all un wanted plants , and about the judging of gardens, i think growing Mj is the same, unless you can really taste it you can never really know :( hell i wish there was tech that could transmit smell. like a scratch n sniff for comps hahaha. but that has the potential to be evil lol
