well said, don't get too excited though. First thing you can do is turn off the 400 watt furnace. You are going to be spending a few hundred dollars now so that you can have a 'cool' hid light.
For less money you could get CFL's, T-5's or LED's. Yeah, I know what everyone says.

We see this 100's of times. Newbie comes in, What Light Should I Get? you need a ****watt hid or you won't get any tight bud!!! Never realizing you are growing in a closet. Newbie goes out buys the light, of course brags about what he is going to do, puts it in their closet......all set... out of money and the fugging temperature is 1000degrees what do I do????? Help??? HID's are wrong for closet grower. I'm done. Read my journal if you like. VV

While i agree with pretty much all of victors statments, i dont agree really on the "hid arent for closets".
This is true, there not "ment "to be in closets but but alot of thigs are not ment for the purposes that they are being used lol.
Ive had it work quite a few times.
Right now i have a 1000 watt hps in a closet, not a walk in either.
You just gotta be carefull with securing the light, not to close to n e thing esspecially the plants and circulation is key.
I have a really good fan sucking air out up top behind the light venting outside and another fan at the oppsite end but at bottom bringing cooler air in (not fully nessasary because the force of air leaving sucks cooler air in anyway)
my temps are take from the base of the center plant and it never goes above 82. That is a bit hot mind u but that is just the maximum it has been.
On average id say high sixtys low seventys.
So i think its toatally possible to have a 400 watt in there with no problem just take the hot air out top maybe send cool air in the bottom. if these options are not avail to u than thats different. like i said even just one sucking the hot to the out side and maybe a fan on them will be enough.
if not comfortalbe with that or the temps sre to high which i doubt u can get a lower watt set-up. just please save urself the bullshit and dont get no stupid compact floro setup or somethin like that there only good fo reading books or whatever junk all junk.\
and the result from them will be even worse. u actully in long run save urself $$ i belive.
where are u taking the temps? what part of the grow room?

i just remembered when i crank my out put fan high my temps go up its wierd i know this is some sort of techical awenser for it bbut wierd

So when Gk grew 8oz of bud from three female plants using nothing for lighting but 8-42 watt cfl's that was junk?? I really am not going to repeat it all here. Make sure you read my journal before you make those kind of rash statements, and god help you when I get started with the LED's. VV

I will chime in here and say that you can use HID lights in a closet but you will need to spend the extra money to make sure it stays cool enough. i use a 1000w (600 HPS and a 400 MH) in a small space ( about 3x4x8 ) and my temps are fine but my light is air-cooled and i use a separate powerful exhaust.

I will add that if i were to start growing tomorrow I would probably be PM'ing VV 24x7 until i got a nice CFL/LED set-up. I would also be buying everything seemorebuds has available.

ya well what did it look like? nice tight buds? 8oz woo hoo. i still think hidis the way to go and until there is actual proof l.e.d can do anything near what others can do.ya right. not to say they wont i dunno. every store owner and person in it ive talked with pretty much said same as me about it

i am very happy with my lights. i don't have a CFL/LED set-up to compare so i can't say from experience. But VV has many grow journals with proof that CFL/LEDs can take a grow from seed/clone to harvest without the added cost of HIDs.

if you are set on getting HIDs you won't be disappointed just be ready to deal with the heat.

You mean to say that a picture for everyone of the 69 days of the plants live is not proof. You are acting like a complete ass hole. Following your logic, get on your horse and go get some 'current' information.
No, you said what all of them told you, probably. Think about it. They have thousands of dollars of inventory to get rid of. What do you think they are going to say. I saw an add today, from the place I got my 3 hps.400 watt lights. You can buy a 600 watt or a 1000watt, cheap no hood etc. for $200.00. Why, because no one that has actually done any research on lights and energy efficiency will buy them.
Maybe you need a new shop?? And the 'actual proof' of the effectivness of the T-5's 'everyone says' you can't flower with is in my journal. If you like you can go thru the 'proof' for the last two weeks, it would be pretty hard to fake it don't you think?? Ya right, whatever. VV

right on nice buds dude. so ur saying that every one might as well throw out there set ups and invest it it led. i was never dening that leds were a awesome light source and the efficicny is un surpassed but im not reall sure if everyone is gonna drop everything for technology that will allmost certainly be obsolete soon because its so new im sure there will be major steps and rapidyl thats my guess. because this whole led grow thing is relativley no is it not i dunno i just dont think people are going to convert there thousands of green houses ect at the first sign of some thing good
as for the rest of the light isssue i thought it was a fact thathid were hands down more effi with the use of energy compared to floros what ever i dont pay for power why do i care

Nope I don't recommend throwing out existing lights, I don't recommend buying any more hid's especailly for a new grower that is going to grow in a closet. Why? because it costs more in the long and short run to run the hid and you lose 2' of plant height. It is simple the advancement of light technology. I looked at some awesome led lights for like $60 bucks a bulb, now get this they are made to go into an existing florescent fixture. You take the ballast out put the wiring around it and twist these 300 light led's into you existing 4' florescent fixture. Imagine, if you could get them to make them with the right spectrum of led's and suddenly you could have a led grow light like that for less than $150.00, Why shit, I bet they couldn't keep up with demand for production. Its a little easier to convince a stoner to spend $60.00 for a light bulb than it is MR. Average 'white' light business man. VV

u know i was thinking leds last a long time when i comes to there usable life expectancy what are the gonna do when everyone has them and dont need to replace nearly as often?

Like you said that will take years. No one was buying, or selling cfl's two years ago, now they can't keep them in stock. LED's And the xenon or whatever it is will be next, followed by solar powered light's. I may not be around to see the solar, sure would be neat though. Can't grow outdoors cause its illegal, can use the sun to grow indoors. :blsmoke:VV

I had the same prob with my last grow, so now i have a 465cfm connected to my cool tube, a 265cfm for exhaust, a 4" inline fan for intake, and a 6" oscillating fan blowing on the plants and 2 small 4" fans for air movement in my HydroHut.
Before the cool tube and the exhaust fans my temps with my 400w MH/HPS was getting around 95-98F, "Man i lost alot of plants to the heat". Now the temps stay around 76-82F.
Here is a pic of the setup. Just started a new grow of Misty's.
Its hard to get a good pic.

i have so far only used cfl's and i am very pleased with the outcome but i will be switching to a hps and mh combination for my next grow so i will see which i prefer.
