Well another year is closing and I think it's about time to close out this year with a little look back at the gear that got us here and a hopefully somewhat civil discussion on what panels people should be buying and recommending to noobs in the year 2015.

Personally I thought it was a great year for LED growing as a real drop-in 1000 watt HPS replacement emerged with the AT600. I thought Area's RW line really improved on last year's XGS line and proved that monos shouldn't be ignored completely. And even with Han's new panels, Cali-LW's monster SS880 and RapidLED's Onyx line giving people legitimate and varied choices in 2014 it really was the COB scene to me that pushed the art of LED based MMJ growing foward and probably pushed some HPS growers toward LEDs or at least showed that COBs and LEDs are becoming a legitimate way of growing grade-A MMJ.

Some other stories I thought were interesting was watching Advanced finally realize even older CREE LED tech kicks the snot out of the latest and greatest that comes out of Communist China's state sanctioned factories. And speaking of China, their new rules and standards for the LED industry are going to be implemented shortly. It was smart of them to finally realize that their industry was getting a bad reputation for shyster LED companies and factories turning out shit with undertrained overworked staff, along with managers and owners more interested in stealing money. And of course it was nice of CREE to finally realize that, yes people do grow plants with LEDs and finally released a 650-670nm LED, the 650-670nm XLamp XP-E LED?

So what are we going to recommend to people besides the holy trinity of Hans, AT and A51? I think Plantphotonics should belong here too but it is hard to recommend to people in North/South America. HelioSpectra's latest panel should be included too but until enough people see some grows it sits on the bubble along with Advanced and Onyx. CREE bulbs are out for all but the smallest grows when a Vero can be built solderlessly for so cheap. And Illumitex's NeoSol DS is the Disapointment of the Year to me, easily beating out BML and a few other companies full of promises but not results.

Have I missed someone or something you like? Or hate? C'mon speak up.

I think it will be a pretty good thing if the generic LEDs from China will be of much better quality starting sometime next year....gotta clear that old stock first though, hah. But I agree with the Captain, the COBs are pretty awesome...really a game changer in terms of simplicity. No one really wants to solder a big string of diodes...not me anyway:)

I don't know a lot about cob's but am trying to learn about them. As far as production panels going into next year, they're trying to do a mix of cob's and led's so how about a mix of cxa 3070 ab with cree XP-L. Sound ok?.

I think SDS mentioned this first but some UV based COBs in 2015 would be interesting to see if we could get some even broader high CRI white light without the usual loss in output one sees with higher CRIs.
Standardization of COBs would be a nice present in 2015. This will really help keep the price of good reflectors lower since a reflector manufacturer doesn't have to make a model for each BOB manufacturer, like Ledil does today.
PS Ledil got bought out or a majority stockholder took over. Probably good news for us if they improve their distribution which blows right now AFAIC.

^^^The US State Dept or some such department has always classified LEDs as a highly disruptive technology. Look at all the oppurtunity and money in LEDs + China right now. The Old Guard, the big players and probably China's military are all getting involved now because it's not just nickle and diming people but big contracts switching out the older lighting systems all over China, indoor and out. Private and govenrment contracts. New factories, warehouses, jobs. All that shit . Money like that changes the status quo. Makes rich people wealthy influential people and the Old Guard doesn't like having it's apple cart upset. And no one likes having to share. Can't have some lowlife from whatever province becoming a multi millionaire, out-bribing me for jobs and getting politicians I despise elected all the while fucking my daughter in his limo and taking my table at Hunan Palace. See what I mean.

There's just so much oppurtunity right now, maybe it is time to start a light company. Or at least a magazine so I can get free shit :).

Also, anyone have an opinion on CLW nowadays? Yay or nay? Doesn't ever seem to get a lot of endorsement around here. Lord knows I don't ever recommend them but it doesn't appear they are going bye-bye anytime soon. Is there a situation where the CLW makes sense for MMJ? Like if you live in Antartica and grow in Nanook's shed? (I joke George). Are they any better?

No mention of bridgelux in either article. I know they are small but it seems like their $/lumen is competitive at least on the retail end? Maybe they are operating with tighter margins to grab market share and scaling up is going to be tough?

We all know they like being driven hard and if thats the direction commercial lighting is going....
