So I just finished this contract for a data collection startup, I'm a backend developer. I gotta say, social media APIs like Facebook and Linkden should be fucking outlawed! I will never use social media again after being on the other side of what was a purley fucked up excuse to gather personalized information down to ppls address, name, religion etc.. Then sell that shit to the first pathetic buyer.

I'm literally ashamed of myself for having participated in such things, and I only fear that this goes on everyday, whether you buy something on Amazon, or send someone an email with Gmail.. Some shitbag company is on the receiving end collecting every piece of information possible to sell to the next pathetic buyer.

Can't talk about it anywhere else.. Anyone have experience working with these sorts of scumbags and feel like flaming the shit out of them?

People would rather use Facebook on their iphone than have privacy. It is surprising to me that people ever assumed this type of invasion was not part of the deal.

Right on BT. Those companies aren't worth billions for giving away free service.

Ha, in the sense that it just adds more fuel and incentive for these companies to produce more and more "smart ads"?

What they don't tell you is before you agree to any sort of permission on their platforms, your basic info such as name, email, address etc.. is automatically forfeit. Whatever you make public on "their" network is public to everyone.

Can we flood these collection sites with bullshit data 24/7 somehow?
Basically these companies use your data to determine patters for smarter product placement. For instance, if you and 1k ppl like CocaCola, and out of those 1k ppl have 5k friends who like Pepsi, those 5k friends are now targets that CocaCola affiliates will hard sell with whatever is at their disposal. And the platforms that most of these Big Data companies pay to develop and run eat 1000s of TB of data for breakfast so unless you had say 1 million + people to produce interest in a certain pattern to single out a certain company, only then could you make a slight, minute dent in their fiscal advertising budget, which they will recover from and notice their mistake within a matter of days if not hours, at least the efficient companies do.

This is why I don't use social media.
Same here bro

I do use social media but not without a defense. I "like" almost everything possible and am a female from Bangaledesh who went to Oxford. The advertisements are so irrelevant.
Right on, they probably hate you lol.. it's actually smart to show interest in many unrelated things, makes it difficult for them to contrive a pattern. Most companies have a resource limit per user calculated on a memory/bandwidth metric basis. If you exceed their limit, which they can determine in minutes, they will drop your data or "freeze" it until your online activity becomes more compliant with their platforms. So if you do use social media, its a good idea to mix things up to stay below their radar, good one ;)

ya man im in IT as well and the back end of shit is disgustingly intrusive. and honeslty man if i thought staying away from socical media altogether would
prevent that shit from happening i would, but you really have to boycott "apps" in general. as everyone i download nowwadays has a MANDATORY
agreement allowing it to access ALL types of shit. ur contacts, ur messeges, ur gps local, ur facebook. anything u have. and it wont let u download
the app without agreeing lol i just accept my overall privacy has been super raped. not that im OK with it but until a path turns up where this can
be avoided , theres not much you can do. i limit myself to the necessary apps.

I meant that if not so many people were using the adblocker extension these companies wouldn't have to sell our info to get money. The development of adblock has changed site ownership a lot in terms of money making.

I agree, but they still track you through your IP address, even if its proxied. Plugins like ghostery and doNotTrackme work to an extent granted you keep the tracker lists updated.

I hear you, I registered a domain and pointed it to an AWS free tier instance with an email server just to eliminate the use of Gmail. For everything else I use a proxy service.

I wouldn't doubt if the monks at the vatican ain't using all the info to write everyones epitats. I know local churches keep records of the people who reside and visit in their townships.

Just posted a couple of pics of porn, tits, vajayjay's on my account, and deleted it. Hoping they will wipe all my info. I didn't have much in there anyways as I was pretty certain facebook was an unsafe thing.

I could myself track down employees that did not report themselves, by going through their facebook and talking with relatives. I think that's why I had it reactivated last time as well.

Dankman, I feel you. I'm a software developer who has done some pretty heinous stuff for our "leaders" and the more I've committed to writing code for these motherfuckers, the more I've realized how much of my soul has been taken in the process. My advice to anyone who writes software is to just forsake anyone else (especially gov. contracts) and work for your own interests. We're in a position to where we've got the majority of the power, the people who sign our checks do so because they can't fathom nor recreate what we do.

If you've ever half a mind to try to leverage your prior shit into something vengeful, I know that I'd be down to help as well as probably several capable people on these forums, so make sure you remember that. The communities that you are engaged and tapped into have so much more power than your "superiors" in the U.S., we may as well band together to make a fucking difference instead of gathering trash for those who cultivate trash.
