The Classics, ie NL, Super Skunk, White Widow, how do they compare to todays award winning hybrids?

I'd like to do a classics grow of Skunk no1 or super Skunk, Northern Lights, White Widow. Are they inferior to todays hybrid strains?
Also which seedbanks for those strains?

NL and WW dont have the stink some people like. If you call Super Skunk anything with KUSH in it, people absolutely love it and think it is one of the best strains. If you call it anything with SKUNK in it, people like it but, they arent very excited about it.

ha ha thought as much. I really get the feeling people just buy into names these days that really are just pheno's of the classics. I remember White Widow in Dam in the late nineties that was sooo pungent, like sweet baby puke. I guess that was because people were putting a lot of effort into getting it to win awards. Funny old game this plant naming lark. I suppose 'Weed' just doesn't induce the same kind of fantasy in teenagers as something like Blue Dragons Pubes

Good thinking man, I want to do a skunk & true blueberry grow. Little throwback myself. Gonna go with DJ short and sensi shiva skunk. Unless anyone has a thought on a more skunk piss smelling strain, hit me.
I was thinking Sensi for the Skunk and Nirvana for the NL. DJ SHort for the true Blueberry yeah? What was the original White Widow ? Sensi too?

Original White Widow is now called Black Widow mrnice.nl would be the best place to get MNS beans going to be running that Neville's Haze and Ortega NL x NL#5. They are really good for older genetics. Sensi Seeds is good to Dutch Passion has some old school shit too.

I've grown out real deal indica dom WW from the Netherlands and it was very smelly/pungent and distinct on and off the plant. So much that I dont care to grow it or smoke it for some time. Its a flavor & smell that you get burned out on quick just because it is so "individual". If someone has real WW, I can smell it from a mile away in the bag/joint/hash -you name it haha. Its definitely one you dont soon forget.

Personally for me white widow is the most overrated strain Ive ever grown or smoked. Dont get me wrong it is hella frosty but the taste for me is a real turn off. Id take a number of todays polyhybrids over that shit all day and twice on Sundays.

Thats just me tho. A lot of my friends loved it and the other widow crosses I did.

I grew 6 flying dutchmen white widow and 6 OG Raskal the white S1 seeds. the WW tested at like 14% and the the white was 23%, it was no contested.

The white was probably the second best thing I've grown. The hybrid far surpasses anything original I've grown and I grew alot of sensi seeds, nirvana staples.
I'm pretty sure the skunk #1 and super skunk, NL #5 from sensi seeds are not the same as they were in the late 90s and early 00s. I also think some breeders putting out s4 and f4+ seeds genetics are very random on 6 packs.

But the best seeds I've ever popped were from s1 clone only seeds or single clone only X F1s so far. cannaventure comes to mind here.

Very @BenRipped interesting thank you. How do you test ? Are there home kits you can buy?
And what is White, as opposed to White Widow, can I still get it?

Black Widow has very very very smelly phenotypes that people love. Holds up plenty well, but you need to hunt. It's a requirement in pretty much all of MNS lines. The winners are pretty god damn amazing though.

NL depends on the source. Peakseeds version holds up well IMO. Not as potent as some modern stuff but the buzz is great and it's a stable and reliable strain. I've seen some real frosty specimens too that might hold up quite well IDK, but the ones I grew were still really nice.

Blueberry from PeakseedsBC again, holds up very well. A bit of hunting required but not that much. Really finicky.

Warlock, which is a slightly different take on Super Skunk - there's a cut that goes around Vancouver Island that is one of my all time favorite smokes. The guy who grows it does top flight work too. Pretty sure you can still get seeds from Serious for this one though. Worth hunting IMO if the line hasn't changed.

I just ordered a pack of NorthernSkunk from Peakseeds. I expect it to be an all around solid plant.

@OGEvilgenius I've read quite a few of your posts where you found strains with strong reputations as "not potent" or just plain weak. I respect your opinion and would like you to list those that did make your cut for potency (other than Sugar Punch, which is not available anyway).

How come everyone goes mad about Cheese which is basically just Skunk no 1 ??
I have yet to be impressed with a cheese variety. Not bad smoke, but took a while in jars before it was really "cheesy".... not my favorite. I couldnt keep any of the 2 cheeses that I grew out from foxtailing.

Some Black Widow samples, not all. Sweet Skunk from Peakseeds is in the ball park. Some Shackzilla phenotypes as well. As well some Silverfields phenotypes. Girl Scout Cookies from Chimera.

Novocaine has real nice potency as well. Motarebel. Didn't love the flavor so much. I actually did wind up keeping a cut of it though we'll see how the second round goes.

There are a bunch that are just a notch below but still worthy keepers like Chernobyl, Killingfields, Gods Blue Cheese from JOTI, the pure Afghani I have from a friend.

To be completely honest though, it's pretty hard to compare to a winner Sugar Punch phenotype. I actually have one giving off reallllly distinct skunk notes to the point where people opening the bag are screaming skunk and it just wrecks people without massive tolerance and still gets me fucked up too. Not pure skunk though... that 96 SSH - anything it touches will throw potential gold IMO.

If you're referring to my post about Peyote Purple, that strain is plain weak. Maybe there are winning phenotypes but I didn't find any. @st0wandgrow had his beautiful looking specimen tested and I think it was single digits THC %.... so yeah...
