Easier way. Drop seeds in a glass of water over night plant seeds and watch the grass grow. :) I do use a heat mat and seedling pots with just pro mix.

Drop them in a glass of tap water. Put them up in a dark room temp cabinet. Come back in four days. Thats it enjoy.
Exactly my current method, works great, some fresh DIY seeds can sprout those tails in 48 hours, most take 3, the odd one 4. Stupidly simple and as or more effective than any other method I've used, tried them all pretty well.

Lately I've been popping them into 2 oz. cups first and only the best to make it to 16 oz. cups. Saves me some time, soil and space.

THE BEST WAY?

Is to do what works best for YOU!

Several heavy hitters in the breeding world - Say NO soaking! (don't use distilled or no/low dissolved O2 water - tap set out to get rid of chlorine either).

Tell you what , the other best way is to never freeze them! I had terrible times getting seeds to pop after storing my whole library of seeds in the freezer :/ pretty much ruined most of them.
Sorry, little off topic but just in case anyone's got some in the freezer they're thinking of germing!

It does depend on how old the seed is. I've had seeds for over 10 years and you need to soak those before covering in dirt but new seeds just go straight into the dirt with ample heat for germ.
