The fundamental problem that plagues the politics section

Is a lack of respect for debate and for people holding opposing political viewpoints

In order to hold a successful debate with someone, you have to respect the rules of logic and reason, and you have to ignore your own ego. The object of debate is to try to discredit your opponents position without breaking the rules imposed in formal debate. Doing this is the only way to change hearts and minds and affect actual change

Those who choose to come here to stroke their own ego shouldn't pretend like they're doing anything more than that

Is what you post something that you would call a respectful debate? To debate well, first you must learn how to form a logical argument that is free from logical fallacies. Also claiming to know what another person is thinking lacks substance as an arguing point in a debate over ideas.

You should take a class on this topic. Seriously, you might learn why we are showing you the respect you deserve.

If they believe a pizza place with no basement is running a child sex trafficking ring out of the basement.. yeah, they deserve 0 respect. Didn't someone go into that pizza place with a gun to stir some shit up over that flat out lie?

Everyone deserves a certain amount of respect. If you don't respect me, and I don't respect you, as a person, then we can't reach an agreement.

You can disrespect and disagree with a viewpoint or opinion all you want, that's completely acceptable. But you can't try to silence those you disagree with, and you can't claim superiority over an issue you're unwilling to engage on because you don't respect your opponents position. What seals the deal is the absolute disrespect shown. Two groups disrespect each other enough to just constantly argue and never solve anything. They both do this to inflate their own ego's. Not to actually discuss any real problems.

That's the problem with this section. That's why members have left. That's why only a handful of regulars remain.

Feel free to argue that the nation is more conservative than the polls reflect. Or African Americans support more stringent law enforcement. Just respect the opposition. If you don't, you simply highlight a weakness in your own position rather than expose one in your oppenents
