The Official Canna Coco & Nutrients Thread

No not really any big problems that u need to worry about, but its definitely not helping anything and it may be hurting the final yield slightly. You shouldnt wait until it appears dry but even if you did, it is actually not as dry as it looks. Coco can hold ten times its weight in water, so if you walk into your grow room and see that your plants/coco look dry, it might not be as bad as it looks because the coco is storing water deep within even when it appears dry.

Wow I have things all mixed up now. So in coco how do i know when to water? And I have to give nutes everytime? This is my first time using coco I apologize. I'm using the same water/feed techniques I used in ffof soil.

I'm a little late to the party but I've been using Canna for about 2 years now.

Nutrients every time in coco for the first 30 days after transplant. Then I begin adding in pure waterings every 3 or 4 feedings.

The best plants I've seen in coco were watered 4 times per day. The physical structure of coco retains air, so it is very difficult to over water an established and healthy plant in this media.

During veg, and before the roots are established, I find watering/feeding every other day is fine. Once the roots are set then they need regular daily feedings.

If the coco goes dry salts will form. Always water to saturation with a small amount of run off. I tried it without run off and shit went south in a hurry.

I use Canna A+B with Rhizotonic, CannaZym, and PK 13/14. I also supplement with Humboldt nutrients SeaMag, Deuce-Deuce, and FlavorFul. Canna doesn't have the magnesium that my plants need, and a few strains I have require extra K+. BioBoost has been tried and deemed unworthy. I might do Boost Accelerator this time around, but I'm probably going to go with GH KoolBloom because everyone that uses it gets good results. For the price, to the results, KoolBloom>Accelerator.

You don't want to flush coco without replacing the nutrients unless you are trying to leach nutrients from the plant. CEC is very important for uptake of elements, and washing out the CEC of the media will force the plant to donate elements to establish electrical equilibrium.

Do your homework on this stuff. Read all the CannaTalk magazines, especially the coco stuff. A quick google of "Coco CEC" will lead you down an interesting path.

Yes, you should add nutes everytime just like any other type of hydro.

I have a detailed post about watering coco somewhere back there but according to canna, the proper time to water is when the coco has lost half its water weight. Meaning that after you water the plant and it has drained you should pick up the plant/comtainer and get a idea of how much it weighs right after watering... then when the container has lost about half its weight it is time to water again.

If you have a lot of plants they will dry out at slightly different times which may make it hard to decide when to water the crop... In a situation where you have a lot of plants then a good rule of thumb to keep things simple is to water when 50% of the total number of containers have lost 50% of their water weight.

Everyone who has pm'd me or asked here, i am still getting to ya... just been poppin in real quick when i have a minute and answering the shorter easier posts but im not tryin 2 fade anyone and will answer ur Q's asap

Looks like u got several deficiencies going on Mg N and possible Ca P... Probably partially from lock out due to your high pH, but I also think you may need to raise the strength of your nutes unless you have experienced fert burn at higher a EC. Also, a few heavy waterings with the nutrient solution pH'd to 5.6-5.8 with plenty of run off should pull your pH back to a better range.

Deficiencies are extremely common in the first 2 weeks of flowering.
Foliar feeding with a mild complete/semi-complete nutrient solution or kelp extract will be the fastest and most efficient way to take additional action... You can use epson salt for the Mg def and it should be fine to combine with a kelp product... Compost teas are good too.

Thanks for the advice j, will definatly be bringing the nutes up, since increasing to 1.8 theres been some good growth and tops look much healthier. What Ec would you reccomend for foliar feeds with light nute solution? Ive got some maxicrop plant growth stimulant, is this along the right lines?

I used epsom previously at 1tsp per liter and this took the ec way high, i think the epsom has a naturally high ec. Do you just use this on its own with foliar feed, im just unsure whether this will lock out other nutes if its too strong.

Thanx alot jberry I'll keep all of that in mind. All 3 clones are showing signs of recovery which is always good. I'll keep up with feeding with nutes everytime.

After reading a lot and experimenting with my onwn, Jberry is right as always, in both respects, in that you must water when the medium feels half it's weight in water retention. So, if you have a big plant in a medium that is small then it will drink a lot more than a plant that is in a way too big pot. Since it is a hydro medium you want to water as much as possible. So keep them in a smaller pot at which is effective to water a couple times a day. Watering every day, at least, will keep your yields up and gain much weight and growth. Trust me on this!

Pukka,
It really depends on the strain of plant. Some strains can do this and others have a real hard time doing it. For instance, I have done this with diesel and tried the same time with chem dawg to no avail. I would suggest going to straight 24 hour light if you do try it.
Also, it depends on how long the flowering one has been in flower that will dictate if it will clone.
Just my 2 cents from experience.

that isnt a good idea. alot of experinced growers wouldnt recommend this becouse of tress ect ect bla bla = problems. so just take cuttings before you put in flower

I do agree with Nas2007 that it isn't a good idea. It can be done but will always seem to be done with less than favorable results. And will take longer than not in flowering already.

I have to say that I have been using the coco with Botanicare nutrients. While the results were pretty good, now I have been using Canna A&B and cannot believe the difference! I still add the cal mag and then the A&B. I have also supplemented the great white once. Man growth is unbelievable! Healthy and vigoruous like never before.
So this is just a notice to all people using hydro nutes with coco. Use coco specific nutes and you will be even more blown away!

My local hydro shop is giving away free canna samples. Coco, nutes, all their stuff for side by side trials. I think I will pick some up soon!
