New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner is plainly fired up and ready to go. In a losing battle to secure passage of a bill to fund health care and compensation for ill 9/11 rescue workers, he unleashed a tirade against what he called unprincipled GOP opponents of the measure. Watch his outburst, which concluded in him smashing down the House rostrum microphone:
The House voted down the bill, which would have provided $3.2 billion over the next 10 years to fund free health care for 9/11 rescue and recovery workers who have fallen ill from toxic smoke and debris they breathed at the World Trade Center site. The bill would have also provided $4.2 billion in compensation over that same span. The legislation proposed to pay for the benefits by closing a tax loophole on foreign subsidiaries that do business in the United States.

The House Democratic leadership employed an arcane procedural maneuver to suspend the rules before consideration of the bill (titled the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act). Democrats reportedly used the gambit to prevent House Republicans from swamping the otherwise popular measure with what Democrats called excessively partisan amendments. But in order for the bill to pass in this form, it needed a two-thirds majority. The final tally was 255 for it (12 of them Republicans), and 159 against (four of them Democrats).

Some GOP opponents painted it as a "slush fund" for New York that the rest of America would be forced to fund through tax increases. In response to the measure's defeat, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg blasted both sides of the aisle.
"It was wrong for the overwhelming majority of Republicans to vote against the bill, and it was wrong for Democrats to bring the bill to the floor under rules that made passage so much more difficult," he said.
The Washington Post's Greg Sargent concurred, citing Democratic incompetence and Republican political chicanery as the principal reasons for the defeat. Sargent wrote that the Republicans are trying to "render government ineffective in order to deny Dems victories, create a sense that government is broken and has failed to deliver, stoke anti-incumbent fervor, and ensure that Dems bear the brunt of blame for government dysfunction." He adds, "Dems need to stop responding superficially to Republican opposition, and tailor their response to the GOP's underlying strategy."
Meanwhile, Weiner is still talking, going on Fox News Friday morning to blast his Republican colleagues in a debate with GOP Rep. Peter King (a sponsor of the bill, who harshly criticized Democrats' decision to go for a two-thirds majority).
"You know, this is not something that got rushed through, this is nine years in the making," Weiner said. "This is doing the right thing, and we should have passed this bill overwhelmingly without any controversy at all. But unfortunately, the party of 'no' hit a new low last night."
The bill's defeat now means that ill 9/11 rescue and recovery workers and their families will have to seek recourse through the U.S. court system for their medical expenses.
the party of no hits a new low!

if you're one of the brave men and women who ran into the fiery debris on 9/11 to try and find survivors, and suffered a career-ending injury, THE ELITE DOESN'T CARE.

it's sickening and very American......

Horrible copy and paste...

If it was such a great bill, why couldnt the democrats get a unanimous vote on it? 6% of their own party voted no...

So, I guess it was bi-partisan. Just not bi-partisan in the direction you wanted it to go... :P

Repukes suck the big one. The only thing they care about is "The Bottom Line"! It is obvious to any that have eyes and ears. If you can't see this, you are either deaf or blind or both. JMHO!

Have you read the bill? Have you taken the time to evaluate the arguments of the other side?

How can you accuse someone of being deaf and blind while not being informed? Seems Ironic eh?

Ironic indeed. The premis is simple, help the injured or tell them to fuck off. The repukes chose the latter.

Really easy to make a decision based on less than 1/2 of the total information eh?

TBH I havent reviewed the bill either. But, why didnt 6% of the democrats vote for it? Maybe the republicans wanted the congress to pay for it like the democrats promised to... That would be horrible eh? Just like wanting them to pay for the unemployment.

Do you understand that the politicians are stealing money from your children and grandchildren (all of the politicians, not just one party) to pay for projects that are so unpopular that they cannot raise taxes to pay for them now? Do you realize what the entire government is doing?

Here's what I understand. The politicians are stealing money from all of us and our granchildren, most of it for fucked up things like two unnecessary wars, corporate tax breakes, tax cuts for the top 2%, and a plethora of things that don't help the citizenry in any way. If the assholes are going to steal from us, how about giving some of it back in health care, schooling, infrastructure, rebuilding our electrical grid, etc.? For every 14.00 spent on the wars, just one fucking dollar is spent helping America. What is wrong with that picture?

Now that the quote near the top is readable...

Hmm.. Excessively partisan amendments. You mean like, things that the Republicans want to see added to the bill? The Democrats purposely prevent the Republicans from proposing amendments and then scream when the Republicans do not roll over and vote for the bill..... ROFLMAO!!!

This is your tax dollars at work...

I dont agree with the wars either. I dont agree with healthcare. I dont agree with more money spent on schooling (I like the voucher idea). I like the idea of nuclear power and renewing the electrical grid.

Dont automatically blame the Republicans at times like this. It is clearly evident that neither side is really interested in helping the victims of 9/11. If you need any other proof than the fact that NINE YEARS HAVE ALREADY PASSED!!! FFS... Stop being pointed in one direction when both sides are equally guilty.

i botched the copy/paste, i know.... that's not the point.

this sends a very grim message to emergency personel. the government will not care for you if you are critically injured on the job if its a major emergency.

yet they can scramble air force jets, close down an entire airspace, and call up every police officer in who knows how many counties for a wedding...... :joint:

Oh really ? Now it's about the bill ? It hasn't been about the bills. The Replublican tact has been "NO" to everything.

Couldn't have said it better: "Republicans are trying to 'render government ineffective in order to deny Dems victories, create a sense that government is broken and has failed to deliver, stoke anti-incumbent fervor, and ensure that Dems bear the brunt of blame for government dysfunction.'"

I realize what the entire government is doing - NOTHING at all for the most part - thank the repukes.

you're eating the republican bait......

they have no ammendments to make. that's just an excuse, it just sounds a lot more legit if they say: "we have ammendments we wanted to make"...

they just want to vote no no no no no no no.

Please enlighten us, which party controls the executive and legislative branch of government? The Democrats are so dysfunctional that even with a majority of the power they still can't get much done, then they have to balls to blame it on the republicans lol.

I LOL at this, don't you people know that there was no reason for 911 workers and rescuers to get sick in the first place. NOTHING toxic in any of the debris or released into the air! The official government stance is that there was nothing toxic and the air was OK to breathe. Our government officials are benevolent father types who never lie about anything!! If you don't believe that 911 was a conspiracy then you must believe that the dust was OK to be exposed to, official government word should never be questioned.

The answer is no. Obvious by how uninformed he is as well as the talking head comments he makes. As many times as he quits and comes back he reminds me of Brett Favre except Favre wasn't as obnoxious. :-P

i heard the particulars on why repukes didn't want this to pass.

it was going to be paid for with a tax increase, on subsidiaries to multinationals using the foreign status loopholes by being 'based' in other countries to avoid paying income taxes on operations within the US... basically those individuals or companies who rent-a-box in the cayman islands or switzerland to avoid paying taxes to the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, would not be able to do this any more................................................................

who are they looking out for again??????

actions speak louder than words.

Uhhh, Aren't you a stout righty? Don't you pay homage to Fox talking heads. They are the ones touting this venue. Oh poor poor 911 workers, crying for health care. What a total mind fuck. They need medical and the government they went in to help, denies it. This is the righties in action

Actually no, im not a republican at all, but glad you can label people who disagree with your ideas as "Must be a Righty". I don't watch FoX news, EVER. Its not Righties in action either if the majority of congress is Democrats, you see when you have a majority you can do what you want, but they don't give a fuck about the Mundane. You think Obama gives 2 shits whether you live or die? He is more interested in the back 9 at camp David than whether or not you will eat tomorrow. You think any politician except maybe Ron Paul and a few like minded people care one iota about the common citizen? Your dreams of a Utopian society are exactly that, dreams.

oh man... that rant is classic...

do you think obama gives a shit about you??? NO.... but ron paul does...

hahahaha....

might as well put the disclaimer: bought and paid for by ron paul's LIES.

just because he thinks weed should be legal (that's what he says) doesn't make him the incarnation of christ....

he's another shrewd politician, and he's good at lying, like the rest of them...

before my thread veers into the realm of stupidity,

I want to make clear:

the republicans voted no on a bill destined to give 9/11 responders who have suffered physical ailments directly related to their heroic work on 9/11 the days and weeks after the towers collapsed.

why???

IT WAS GOING TO CLOSE A LOOPHOLE THAT ALLOWS FOREIGN MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANIES TO LIST THEIR ADDRESS AT A TAX-HAVEN COUNTRY (ONES THAT KEEP FINANCIAL INFORMATION SECRET, NO MATTER WHAT), SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY INCOME TAXES TO THE US GOVERNMENT, FOR OPERATIONS ACTIVITIES PERFORMED WITHIN THE US MAINLAND.
