Honestly I couldn't tell ya. Canadian here. We have a bunch of parties, Yet I always vote for myself. It's our way of saying hey were here we just don't like those options, and they count it.

That's pretty funny, I didn't know that.

I also think money is a major factor why third parties aren't as successful. Another thing is rampant misinformation regarding a party's ideology, which without $ or media contacts, is impossible to dispel.

The democrat party in one form or another has been around since the 1790s.The republicans have been around since the 1850s. They have stacked the deck in their favor as far as the rules. Federalism probably plays a part as well requiring the parties to deal with 50 independent state governments with different rules in each one.

The two major parties control which candidates get into the debates, so the ideas of third party candidates don't get a fair airing. Also, the two major parties have the major media sources in their camps.

Its complicated.
Ron Paul said the two main parties own the debates.
You can't hardly get in unless your one of the chosen ones.
He also said that when you run third party you spend all your money just getting on the ballots.
In the states if your not in one of the two main parties there must be something wrong with you.
Libertarian party is often the butt of jokes in major media.
The libertarians are our third largest party.

There is talk of trying to unify the Constitution party, Libertarian party, and even the Green party.
In order to challenge the two main parties.
But it will never happen.

Money does play a major role.
As the Two main parties are already bought and payed for.
There is no reason to fund a third.
