Nice video. It looks like he's used about 200 unripe poppy heads which I'm guessing come from roughly 100 poppy plants/seeds, that's no small garden grow.
Would like to see one of these on how to gather raw poppy so you can smoke it...

I wonder how they do in an indoor grow?
I got a couple of packs of opium poppy seeds in early June but never planted them as I figured it would be too late for our short, intense growing season up north here. A friend gave my wife a couple dozen dried heads that I ground up in a little coffee grinder then capped the straw in '00' caps and tried one with little effect so upped the dose and at 3 felt just great and my joint pain was almost gone.
There's about 500 seeds in each pack so I'd like to grow a couple hundred outside next year but could do a few dozen indoors in the meantime if they will mature enough to be of use.
As the opiods are present all thru the plant extracting the whole plant should give me a more concentrated pain killer too so I want to do some of that. and hopefully I'll get lots of seeds for the summer of '25.

I would be terribly afraid growing 100+ poppies outside where I live.. I hear they hit you big time if they think you're growing for opium
I know you can lance the good variety (afghan poppys) and collect the sap, I just don't know how you refine that so it can be smoked...

My mom always had lots of poppies growing around the property. I tried lancing a bunch and scraping off the goo later. I just let it dry to putty like consistency and rolled little balls to smoke in a pipe. Got really doped up on that stuff 40 years ago.
Isn't that the stuff they called Black Tar heroin or is further refining required to get there I wonder.
All poppies have some level of opiates in them but the strain, Papaver somniferum, has the highest levels and is called the Opium Poppy because of that. Those are the seeds I got. Didn't cost much either. ravensongherbals.com

That's the stuff I'm looking for. I have the right seeds I think, but there's no way I'm growing a hundred poppies outdoors to get an acorn sized nugget of opium.
Also, I thought you had to refine it, in one step, after scraping it, to get the genuine clean & processed opium they used to dispense at opium dens in places like NYC, back in the day. Like in Once Upon A Time In America. I heard without refining it the smoke is harsh and makes you sick.

They make tea out of the poppy straw which is what the ground up heads and plant parts is called.
Poppy seeds like pot seeds don't contain the actual intoxicant I'm pretty sure or you wouldn't get them on buns and bagles at the local baker.

I got no problems with growing a bunch outside here.
I figured there's more to it but I did get messed up with just the dried sap and I am more than capable of taking it a lot further with a diploma in chem and lots of lab gear. I'll need to peruse the Erowid vaults further to get some procedures but I'm sure the How-Tos are all over the web and u-tube.

Poppy seeds tea is dangerous. Best to go a different route. The variability of potency from the leakage deposited on the seeds and the amount needed makes this method unsatisfactory.
Poppy straw tea is much less variable.
