You could prepare soil for next year by covering it in two inches of bark chip, shredded leaves, or grass clippings.
I give mine a watering of kelp and then just leave it to decay, even two weeks after you start it the soil underneath will start looking better. the best part is how long the soil stays perfectly damp.
