timer for HID fixtures such as HPS light

I keep reading that if you use a standard household light timer with a HID fixture such as HPS light that the timer will blow up. What is everyone using for timers? Any links to products would be really appreciated ... and I'm a complete idiot when it comes to electrical fixtures so details will also be greatly appreciated.
