HPS is dead technology and DE is a turbo on a Model T Ford with a flathead 4 cylinder...... DE, CMH/LEC are end of the road refinements nothing more. LED is a developing technology. The day isn't far off when you won't be able to give away an hps setup.

meanwhile DE HPS is still maintaining its 2012 efficiency and pricing
cobs lumen/$ is double what it was 12 mos ago......

What do you mean? HPS is the #1 seller in horticulture lighting world wide. Out side of this site its super rare you will see a garden running on LED. There are millions that would put their DE or SE HPS lamps against your LED. I thought you flowered under DE? You we not amazed?

I think companies like kind and Mars and the likes are what is hurting growers switching to led. Just seen a dude spend his retirement money for a large grow building.....he bought all Mars LEDs and expects them to perform like they advertise.
These people will think LEDs are all shit and switch to hid and likely have trust issues with LEDs....lol.

Doesn't mean its not dead. CDs were around quite a while after MP3 killed them. And I'm not saying its not useful. I'm saying its very old tech that has seen its day, I very much doubt you'll see any ground breaking advances, maybe a minor improvement or two left. Its LED efficiency that's the nail in its coffin, and once LEDS usueful for growlights are commodity priced, that will be the closer. My first CD player cost $800. 10 years later they were $99. Same will happen here. And I believe that now that viable home LED lighting is emerging, THAT will be the market driving down LED costs.

I love LED I'm not trying to start an argument and i think your totally right. I honestly think there is a point where plants don't give fuck how much or what kind of light one gives. And also the gardening world doesn't know about LED yet. They have no idea something like cobs exist.

You must be drinking alcohol pretty hard right now bro. Are you even thinking about what your saying? I love leds, you love led. Dude the gardening world out side of this site doesn't know about them kicking fucking ass. Fuck you won't find one at any hydro store. And where i live there are hydro stores every 8 blocks. So how is the consumer going to know about cobs and led and put HPS out? Be real about it, not this I'm an led god or some shit. Im not knocking shit bro I have 15 3590's shitters and over 10 grand in stupid fucking cree stock.

anyone starting a business without doing their homework first gets what they deserve. "Hey! I'll buy some lights and some clones and I'll get rich!" Uh Huh, how many times a day does that go up in flames? Nope, I wouldn't use LED for commercial grows yet either, the up front cost for GOOD LED lights ( BML, etc ) is too high. However, someone setting up and large op with borrowed money ( $$$$$$$$$ ) would recover their money in a couple years and eventually, with legalization, they can become tax writeoffs.

Nowhere did I say it wasn't still useful tech. But spiraling energy costs will continue, so the need for more efficient electronic devices grows ever more important.

I agree about plants, they don't care where photons or ions come from, just getting all they can use is. But we care how much it costs us to grow. If you don't care what it costs, then why bother growing? Just go buy your weed. Most of us however, care what it costs us to grow our cannabis.

Your getting fully carried away with the way you are thinking. So now according to you and your posts if one is flowering with HPS or CMH you think we should be buying our meds? You don't even know what we pay for power usage. You don't even know what or what not we are using for nutrients. Your basing all your stuff on lights. Do you have one of these? You want to talk about inespensive lighting.......

it will be somewhere, somone is spending big bucks developing truly useful LED growlights? They maybe someone is looking at what DIY has done and using community ideas? We don't live in a vacuum, word will spread. Didn't say it would happen tomorrow.

You know what I meant. And all I'm pointing out is the inevitable. Do I have one? Yes. I no longer use it. And I'm converting from an assortment of retail LED growlights, to DIY Cree and Citizen based lights, in fact, i just bought some chips from robincm.

I'm not knocking it either. But when a better solution offers itself, wouldn't you switch? I know farners using tractors built in the 1940's still. Does that mean we all should?

Yes, I know how expensive DIY lights are.I'm nowhere near what you have spent. i'm building my second one now. and some of my purchased lights are shitty. But i don't have big, bulky hoods or light ducting, extra extraction fans, etc etc to deal with. But thats my situation and not the same as yours or anyon elses. But I personally, wouldn't spend the money for a new HPS. What I didn't say was that it doesn't work, because we all know it does, and fairly well

So I stand by my statement, its dead technology. Its still useful and will linger for many years yet. But that doesn't change the facts, just like glass tube TV tech, its history..

Cost me right around 2k a month to run my op,electric, nutes, soil lamp replacement @6 months ect.we take down no less than 25oz a week usually more like 30+. So @250 per oz you do the numbers lol.i think hps works pretty dang good. As for efficiency, it all comes from a 12 x20 bloom room and a 1600w veg in a 10 x 10 with lots of room to work.
I hope you guys are right about these cobs being better, would love to see my margins go up :)

Thats awesome. Not sure why you wanted to quoted me though. Im not disrespecting cobs. Please don't go at me Bobby, I'm a business owner as well. I have total respect for what your doing. But because i like something and i know something works perfect without a hitch, you have no right to try and start to engage on me. Theres plenty of people in my trade that don't use my business model and i would never engage with them. Trust me I hate wood fence, but only because I'm a metal fence installer. I like slatted chain link, everyone else likes residential wood fencing. But my fencing lasts a life time, ones wood fence will be rotted in 5 years......... Your bulbs my bulbs. I love you dude. Always have!!!!
