Would most people agree that it's a good decision to top them? and if yes, what age would be appropriate for best growth?

I don't think anyone who knows auto's would agree that it's a good decision to top them.
Other than overfeeding them it's probably the worse thing you can do to auto's.
Training your plants from an early age will promote the formation of new shoots.
If you keep your canopy level, they will all be colas.

Peace.

Scrog or lst, at most you'll get a 30 day veg with most autos.... Now topping a "super auto" might be interesting but idk If I'd do that

ive had luck with it on strains that only one would fit in my box
i can keep an even canopy easier
i started pinching/ supercropping to keep them under control it seems to work better
but if i were to grow the strain taviddude does i could fit one in my box maybe

i usually top it after it has 5-7 nodes around preflower and i cut it at the 3rd node
my reasoning for this is it develops a good root system by then and recovers quicker
and you have a larger root system supporting new growth

its a subject thats been debated over and over again

all i can say is try it you may or may not like the results
some strains respond a lot better
as do some pheno's usually the really bushy ones to start respond a lot better to topping

I topped one early and had terrible results. Looks like it's very strain dependent. I believe halfpound, Advanced Seeds are monsters. I won't try it again unless I know it's a "large" strain like an NL or a Mass or something. Small, low yeilding plants are probably better avoided unless your a pro like Tek

i forgot to add it has had 2 small "sample" branches clipped
one broke in late lst
and 2 sprayed with cs and harvested for pollen
this plant is 5 branches short :)

Hey tekdc,

I'm having my first experience with autos outdoor. In your personal experience, do autos branch out even if not topped or pinched etc.? mine has just popped out of the soil yesterday (auto blackberry) and when should I pinch it?. It looks like you know what you're up to when it comes to autos. Also what is your biggest yield from one if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers

2-3 oz is norm , some less if its a smaller container
i honestly dont know what my biggest yield has been
some branch out and some dont

some of them get huge outdoors but from personal experience and from the second hand exp. ive seen they tend to be smaller outdoors
never grown the blackberry
but normally there are different pheno's of the strain that will have totally different structures so there really is no telling until it gets going

i would just let it grow out normal
if its your first grow
i top and pinch for space issues i have a small 3x4x5tall perpetual box often have 8-10 plants in various stages crammed in there
outdoors i dont think there is a need to keep them low pro any more than lst can accomplish

I have a over 5' of space outside as thats how tall my fence is. I'm experienced enough with photo's outdoor but not auto. The blackberry was a freebie from an unknown spanish breeder.
Il be happy with even an ounce because il be growing malawi's, uzbeki's, paki's etc. soon outdoor. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I would not top an auto, It can be done but will be causing delays in finishing time . I would look into LST or other forms of manicuring if it was me

LST is tying the plants branches back and making them more broad making use of horizontal space right? but what if there is only a single cola like a lot of autos are.

auxins are what determines up so to speak in a plant
when you lst your not just tying a branch down your redistributing auxins so the plant thinks budsites are tops and grow up if you do this during veg then the budsites will turn into shoots / branches
just tie down the main stalk and it will branch out

Makes perfect sense, so I guess you don't always have to tip the plant to create more shoots. You learn something new everyday, thanks tekdc.

some autos will branch out a lot, others don't. It's strain dependent on its indica/sativa lineage. Most autos are smaller versions of their lineage before crossed with Ruderalis. LST works great on many autos, and for sure on Skunk Mass by Advanced Seeds! I bent the main stem 2 weeks in and now I have 9 bud sites that look like they will mostly be decent sized colas. Good luck man, and I wouldn't top it, most autos have a 3 week veg cycle and you don't want to be flowering a plant the size of a pack of cigarettes. Let her grow and LST her a bit:)
