topping my plants

I am on my second grow this year and have only got a small grow area (hight)
will i get a better crop if i pinch out the growing tips.
I had four fantastic plants this year but i have a hight restriction this time around. I have a closet grow and the hight i have is 4.5 ft this would include the pots.
I am growing under 400 HPS in soil.

top it pinch it or tie it down,,do something,,,cuz it will outgrow that space

When i top a plant i always "try" to make sure i only cut about 90% of the top away leaving just a bit of stump behind as often this will make at least 3 tops and if your lucky 5 or more

Plenty enough for one person thats for sure

so how do you top a plant, you just pinch off a the leafs growing at the top or what?
