Topping plant and using them as clones? ok or bad idea?

Couple questions..

If I were to top the plants, and use those tops as clones, would that be a bad idea?

Also , after topping a plant, how long should you wait before you can put it into flowering?

My idea was to take clones, and after about a week or so of the clones getting esablished, I would throw the large plants into flowering.

i think the stalk is the part with the rooting hormones so i guess that works so good luck
