"Training" plants in Waterfarms?

I was looking at the diagrams on Training your plant from Big Buddah.
There is a lot of tying down involved which, to me at least, seems like it would be easier in soil, outdoors.
I don't have that option.
Will I just end up tearing the plant out of the hydroton when I tie it down?

I am not pressed for time so I am considering at least trying this. About how long does it normally take to see that the plant is taking to the "training"?
Anyone have any pics of a trained plant in a hydro application?
