trying to get MMJ for Insomnia among other things

I'm 23, and have been dealing with chronic insomnia since middle school. Marijuana has been the only thing that's helped me since all other things (tylenol pm, benedryl, sleeping pills) all seem to have a reverse effect on me, or cause me to be so groggy in the morning that I can't function. I've been smoking for the past four years, but had to quit for the past month to try and get a job, and my insomnia and other conditions have been out of control. I haven't slept in two days, literally. I live in WestLA, and also suffer from Eczema, Sciatic pain, and painful monthly women's issues (I'll save you boys the embarrassment by listing it out loud). I got a referral from my doc to go see a Sleep Specialist, and am wondering if that(documentation of seeing the sleep specialist) will be enough to get my MMJ card once my CA drivers license comes in the mail, or if I'm going to have any issues getting my card. Any responses to this post are loved, cause I'm desperate. thanks!

I don't think you'll have a problem. Have a frank and open discussion with your doctor. the sleep specialist should actually be able to document your problem. Some people are not sun worshipers. their body clock is on another schedule entirely. If MJ helps, it would be a shame to have to take sleeping pills which have been proven to cause dependency, sleep walking, depression, just to name a few symptoms.

Good luck to you!!!

And i agree, all woman should qualify for MMJ at least once a month! :o

thank you! and I agree. I had another friend with insomnia just tell me today how he had to wean himself off of Ativan (which isnt suppose to create dependency) cause it wasn't working for him anymore, and he suffered with withdrawals from it and hasn't slept in four days. To be honest, it just really scares me and I dont want anything to do with pills, and I've tried every over the counter remedy known to man, and nothing. Here's to hoping I can make this work!

You should get some more responses on this thread, hopefully from others in Cali that can direct you, if needed, to the right group.

Go to the doc and take care of it, if that's what will help you. It's hard to ask others if you need it because ultimately you need to decide whether you're actually doing it for the right reasons or not. I personally don't like folks that take advantage of the system but you sound like you would benefit from the right regimine.

I know that MMJ can help me, because cannabis has been the only thing keeping it underwraps for the past four years. I just don't want to have a huge issue in getting my card, even though I'll be going to see a sleep specialist before I try to obtain my recommendation for it. if you live in LA, do you have any suggestions on where to go?

I'm not in LA, so I've not the slightest idea. Your friendly neighborhood google can surely help.

I sympathize with you.... my mom's suffered from chronic insomnia her entire life, and she's 64. She's tried everything and anything in the way of sleep medications, both over the counter and prescribed (including Ambien, Lunesta, etc.), with little to no effect, or sometimes they seem to help briefly and then stop. She finally was referred to one of those sleep disorder clinics recently but they basically said she's screwed, that her brain just doesn't shut down, and that a hypno-therapist would probably help more than anything. Those clinics aren't very helpful unless you suffer from sleep apnia, usually related to obesity or some malformity in the breathing passages. As a list ditch effort she decided to try and get a MM card a try some MJ to see if that might help, both with her insomnia and a number of other chronic pain related problems she has. No trouble getting a MM card, and I easily got one as well since I broke pretty much every bone from the waist down in a near-fatal skydiving accident and have more metal in my body than a Terminator.

You won't have ANY trouble getting a MM card with chronic insomnia, especially if you have other pain related problems. Don't even bother trying to get the referral from any of your usual doctors though, go to a doctor that specializes in MM referrals, they're all over the southland just search for medical marijuana doctors. My mom and I both went to the same one in Van Nuys that I highly recommend (Best Price Evaluations), just off the 405 a few miles north of the 101. Very inexpensive and they've been around a while and have multiple locations. That's important when you get a MM referral because when you purchase medical MJ they contact the referring doctor's office, and if they're not around any longer you need to get a new referral from another doctor. This place has a bunch of different coupons on their website, and you'll definitely find one that will save you some money, even if it means having to go on a certain day of the month. Even at full price though it's only $60 I think for the visit, exam, and referral which is very cheap. Another $20 if you want a convenient MM ID card you can keep in your wallet instead of showing the doctor's referral, but you'll always need the original referral the first time you walk into any MM dispensary and join.

Good luck, come back and post to let us know if you get one.

Oh and if you find a doctor, any doctor, you're probably going to wonder why they're on the fringe of pyramid schemes and taking your money. It's perfectly natural. Most (NOT all) of the doctors you see specifically for the need of obtaining a MMJ rec are there for just that. A PHD to agree with you and sign a form so some one else can make money as well.

Oh and by the way, the MJ has helped with my mom's insomnia, and her chronic pain, although she ONLY smokes at bedtime so that's the only time she gets the pain relief from it. Everybody is different though and there are all sorts of different reasons for insomnica, so nobody can come on here and say that it will or won't help you. Medical MJ isn't cheap though to say the least, even growing your own isn't really that cheap (but very rewarding :D), so make sure this is what works best for you rather than the usual things like Ambien, Ambien CR, Lunesta, etc. that you can get inexpensively with insurance usually. If you're not insured then MJ is probably cheaper than any of those things if you're only using it to help you sleep.

Thanks, this really is a huge, huge help. I figure if I'm able to atleast show that I've tried other forms of medication that I should be able to obtain my card without an issue(because really, I can't take this insomnia thing anymore. I'm lucky if I get to sleep before 7am). I'm just waiting for my CA License in the mail so I can make an appointment. I know the sleep specialist won't really help me, especially because I know I don't have sleep apnea or anything of that sort. I just figured the more documentation I have on the issue, it might be better. Did you or your mom have to take any old prescriptions with, or even medical records? Or was it sort of a based on a conversation/evaluation, type thing?

hah thanks. I also looked over your thread, and I sympathize with you and your daily routine with/without using the prescription pharmaceutical. Honestly, I haven't had any prescriptions for sleeping pills or anti-anxiety meds in the past, simply because they scare me and I know too many people who have gotten hooked on them, and they haven't always had the best results after awhile(mostly dependency issues). Since I'm young, I don't want to have to rely on a pill for the rest of my life to get me through this.

You're using your noodle. Avoiding drug dependency is a good thing.
