Tutorial to Growing with Cfl's

You can try vegging at 2700K if you want to. You have plenty of bulbs, but they are flowering spectrum, not vegging. I'm really not sure which way would work better. If it were me, I'd go to wal-mart and get a 2 pack of daylight 6500K bulbs for 10 bucks and do 18/6 veg. I'm not one for risk taking tho-LOL
Sounds good, I'll go get some of those tm morn. lol no risk at all !!! =]

I'm so glad to know that you are one of those people that asks for advice and then actually LISTENS, instead of just making excuses why NOT to try something. I hope your grow turns out GREAT!!!
Thanks man, I appreciate the help, I read as many forums as possible to get an idea of what to do. I'll start a grow journal asap with pics to show set up.

Being that most of us using cfls are in small spaces i was wondering what the heat on the higher wattage bulbs is like. Lets say a 85 watt flowering bulb compared to a 42 watt of the same type?

this is random, but I'll put in my .02 on SIMPLE cost effective fixtures (as long as you're cool with free-hanging CFLs) WITH NO WIRING

the overall cost is about $10, but that's for two bulbs, incl. fixtures and cord. (again, NO WIRING!)

go to Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, wherever has a moderate selection of electrical supplies (you need 120v to medium base(2 prong) adapters)

get a pair of 120v to medium base adapters; they look like a normal medium base bulb screw-in with 2 prongs on the back for plugging into a 120v outlet

get a pair, or a 12-pack of CFL bulbs. wattage is your budget's choice. at least get a pair.

get a 120v, ungrounded extension cord. IT MUST HAVE THREE OUTLETS ON THE END or else you're wasting your money, but it'll still work. the outlets are positioned with two on one side of the female plug, and one outlet on the other side of the female plug (so the pair of bulbs hang balanced) it should be white and less than $1.50. don't worry, it'll handle 1500 watts (that's like 50 bulbs).

now plug in the adapters to the extension cord. hang it wherever it will be of most use to your plants without burning them. THINK SHADOWS!

screw in the bulbs, plug in the male end of the extension cord, watch your plants go CRAZY from the added energy they can now generate.

PUT IT ON A SURGE PROTECTOR (under $10, easily)

P.S. that 3rd outlet on the extension cord can be used for daisy-chaining pairs of bulbs, as long as you stick to cords with small, ungrounded, male plugs that don't get in the way of the socket-outlet adapter

Happy Growing!

Heys guys great info here Doc it answered 80% of my questions I just wana ask the last few questions. This is my very first grow indoor and outdoor. I got a seed (not too sure on strain) from a friend when we harvested his 8ft plant which yielded a pound lol. My grow area is pretty ghetto lol it’s a large box that’s 3ft 9” high , 20” wide , and 16” deep , ive covered the inside with foil its pretty reflective , Ive added an 8cm pc fan towards the upper left side of the box to blow any hot air out of the box n placed a bowl of water in the box to keep humidity. Atm im using 2x 24w 125w equivalence 1450 lumens 6500k cool daylight spectrum cfls and a 40w incandescent bulb 600 lumens just for extra lighting. Im planning to go to the store n buy 2 more 24w 6500k cfls and 4x 24w 125w equivalence 1450 lumens 2700k warm white spectrum cfls. Using 18-6 lighting for veg n then 12-12 for flowering. My questions are:
Should I use all 8 cfls 4x 6500k n 4x 2700k (totaling 176w 1000w equivalence 10 000 lumens)all at once in both veg and flowering stages or should I use 6 cfls 4x 6500k n 2x 2700k during veg n then 4x 2700k n 2x 6500k (totaling 128w 750w equivalence 7100 lumens) during flowering ?
Is it possible to make 2 or 3 clones from this tree without using any chemicals or rooting hormone just water and darkness/light which ever they need and have them grow reasonably ?
With flowering can u make the plant go into flowering anytime or is there an optimal point like will I be picking when to start flowering or will the plant tell me , can a marijuana plant if kept in 18-6 lighting never go into flowering oh n can only a male marijuana plant pollinate a female or can other plants pollinate a female marijuana plant ?
Oh n I read this sensmila thing I think it is where if a female plant is never pollinated and in result wont produce seeds, is this true ?
And if I did clone n it was successful if I took 2 clones from the 3 n placed them outside in 10L pots at the start of spring which for me is towards the end of july would they grow until next year beginning of winter n flower n if yes would it be hard to maintain them outside being stealthy is no problem ?

Sorry for all the writing if you could help with even only 1 answer that would be great n thanx in advanced to whoever answers =)

the plant is 8 days old when the seed germinated i didnt realise it would actually germinate coz before that i tried germinating around 20 seeds n none of them worked (*i think they werent stored properly) so i was surprised n happy but i realised it was too cold outside for a seedling ( winter begins 1st of june for me) so i decided to after some long research make a grow area out of a larger box i had. up until day 6 the 40watt 600 lumen incandescent bulb was all i had as a light source so im not sure if my plant is very small, small, normal,or big, in size, i think small coz compared to other people at the same age mine looks like its growing slighty slower but that should change coz on day 7 after instaling the 2 new cfls the plant grew more quicker.

P.S lol sorry for sooo much writing.

I recently used 2 150 watt 6500k CFL bulbs and a 90 Watt LED UFO to veg and flower eight white widow plants in a 8x4 grow tent. My experience was not that great. The flowers lacked density and were very leafy. I have now purchased a 600 watt HPS for flowering and am going to split my grow room into two. One side with the CFLS and LEDS for veg and the other side for flowering with the 600 watt HPS. Does anyone have any experience with vegging with CFLS and LEDS and then flowering with HPS? Im hoping that when I flower with the HPS that the buds will turn out better. Should I purchase a metal halide lamp to veg my plants with on the other side of the grow room? I really like the CFLS and LED because they are more energy efficient then MH or HPS. Hopefully someone can help me out.

lol ... its true the more the better.there is no magic answer for u
necessity is based on what YOU want.

you could probably have 1 cfl for 4 1' plants ... they would grow... but not very well

for me, i find 12 25W CFLs are all i need for my veg room (could flower in there too if i wanted)
10 of these cfls veg 3- 3'plants 7 - 1.5' plants
and the last 2 veg about 14- 5" clones

batter up
This is the kind of answer I have been looking for. Now how about flowering? I know you change spectrum, but how many lights?

heres an update this is the plant at 2 weeks got a set of 5 blade leafs and added 2 more 8 cm pc fans bringing cool fresh air through some pipes that lead to the bottom of the room door ( i have the heater on and it just started winter here so its really cold) using 2x 24w=125w output 6500k 1450 lumens cfls and 1x 24w=125w output 2700k 1550 lumen cfls totaling 72w=375w output 4450 lumens planning to use 3 more later on when the plant is bigger. ill keep updates every week or so. can u guys tell me if the plant looks too small for its age and if its doing alright and i need to know if now is the time to transfer it to its permanent pot its pretty big not too sure on volume (i think roughly around 3 gallons) but its 1ft tall and has a outer perimeter of 33 inches
