Underground Plant? (Pics)

I plant my seedlings in dixie cups, and I know you're not supposed to, but I used clear ones because its all I had around the house when this batch of seeds popped. I go to water my seedlings today, and what do I see? I see two little green testicle looking things on the side of one of the cups. I look closer and I see that it is some kind of little baby plant. Now, I know its possible that its just a seed that was in my soil, but it emerged just as the roots started to, and I'm beginning to wonder if the light exposure didn't cause another plant to form from the plants root structure. Is this possible, two plants sharing the same roots? Just curious, I already covered the outside of the cup with electrical tape to discourage algae growth today anyway, so whatever it is it will die soon.

Those things are in a lot of soils... Never paid them much mind as they have never impeded the plants ability to grow... but now I'm curious about what they are.
