Some friends think they've stumbled upon a new way to extract thc (not new but they can't find it anywhere). They heard about boiling stems to get thc crystals left over in the pan once the water boils out. Well, they took that and ran with it. They had about a quarter ounce of trim. Put it in the freezer for half an hour. Put ice water in a blender. Blended it until the liquid was golden (30 sec). Strained the mixture into a nonstick frying pan over a t shirt and pressed the wet trim around on the t shirt. Boiled the water off and ended up with what looks like .5g BHO, 67 degree room and it got hard as glass. .8g golden-yellow powder of what might qualifies as hash. Remove half of the hash to test smoking it, and add 1T coconut oil to simmer on lo for two hours. They're happy with the quality. It could definitely be improved upon but for a first try random thought experiment one has to wonder why this isn't a common thing. It took an hour total for the extracts and 2 more for the cookie. Also, I'm new so point me in the right direction if I need to do something with this post to correct it.

Nope. That tech is 100% mine (utility and design patents pending). They simply copied my process of making hillbilly bubble hash...except, in place of a bottom t-shirt (25 or 45 micron...or Hanes XXS), they caught it in a pan and boiled fuck out of it. Look, I don't want to be the old guy who says he's been doing that shit for years...but, dude, I've been doing that shit years. Personally, I use old bong water, a sock, and a camping stove kettle (a little more refined than your tech, IMHO).

For those of you interested in the history of this tech, I originally had the idea when I was at Benihana's in El Paso. I was at the grill with my girl (not a euphemism), catching shrimp in my mouth, as you do. Anyway, after 23 shrimp and 2 sea urchin smoothies, I suddenly had a righteous stomach ache and threw up, right in front of the chef. Thing is, I managed to raise my t-shirt just in time to catch the chunks. The liquid rushed thru my Iron Maiden t-shirt, landing on the hot plate in front of me. To my surprise, it was 100% full melt. The terps were off the chart. I immediately knew I had something. o_O

very interesting. was not aware that you could extract THC by boiling in water. thought you needed solvents to do that

If there is any THC in the extract described by the OP (and it sounds like there was), it must be from glandular heads (probably non-stalked) on the epidermis of the stem (the reason some people de-kief their stems in a tumbler). Cannabinoids are reportedly only made after plastids in the disc cells dump CBGA into the cavity of the glandular head, where it is turned into THCA or CBDA. I've always thought it interesting that traditional use of Cannabis includes boiling the root for migraine, a use which suggests cannabinoid extraction/separation and possible CB2 activity. Are there glandular trichomes on the root? I wouldn't think so...but, I don't know.

THC is not water soluble. you need solvent or fats like butter to extract it. think the OP is just some kid talking shit

You're correct, of course, about the solubility of THC. However, I see no reason to disbelieve the OP, since the extraction method outlined does not require anything to go into solution. Just as with making bubble hash, the water and ice act by knocking the glandular heads from the surface of the plant material. With the kind of agitation described by the OP (and used in bubble making), what is formed is closer to a temporary emulsion, rather than a solution. If you allow the admixture to stand for any period of time, the polar and non-polar fractions will separate (again, because they are not in solution). These guys just knocked whatever glandular heads were present, thru a t-shirt and into a pan. At no point is a solution necessary.

I did say they used coconut oil after to make edibles. It separated the kief and left some sort of dark residue that was glass like at room temp. It's close to bubble hash or ice wax. It's just a different way to remove the water, with an added perk of a dabbable little oil patch.

I would like to add, this method has a lot of improvements to be made. It was a weed induced idea because smoking trims didn't sound pleasant, and neither did spending hours making edibles. But after trying the hash and oil, it warranted edibles because .2 in a bowl pack of weed was more potent than expected. No where near high quality, but pretty damn good considering it's solventless. If you'll wouldn't eat it, why smoke something that has it in it?

The source did say they added kief to it, and they were sugary, with a little piled up in the bottom of the baggy. So honestly it could just be kief that got a little browned in the frying pan (although when initially blended it turned the water golden-yellow like the end product). But it was way better than smoking trim. More medicine without inhaling more smoke than necessary.

Actually Water is called the "Universal Solvent" as it dissolves more things than any other solvent, just not cannabinoids lol
Water is definitely the universal solvent. One of the nice properties of water is that plant oils are miscible in it, to some degree. Put a few drops of an essential oil in a bottle of water and shake it. Very little separates on standing. Add a few drops of a strong Licorice root infusion (for the saponins) to lower the water tension and water will pick up and carry a lot of fat-soluble molecules (part of the reason in TCM Licorice is said to "harmonize" a decoction/formula).

"The essence of all beings is Earth. The essence of Earth is water. The essence of water is plants. The essence of plants is the human being…." - Chandogya Upanishad I.1.2

i put buds in my percolator basket, with or without cream. both ways produce a drink that has strong effects.
a little cream does it better. I like loose tea in mine too, maybe some cacao bean

hot water will melt waxy trichome heads, releasing the oils. While not dissolved they are separated and easily consumed. cream dissolves the oil though, so no floaties.

Emulsions , mayo is my favorite ;-) nanos even better
Interesting. Nanoemulsions have been used to deliver plant medicines for some time. The first few paragraphs are a good summation of what we've been talking about and reflect my comment about using the saponins from Licorice as a surfactant. "Saponin" is where we get the term soap...and those plants belonging to the Saponaria genus are called the soapworts. If you're producing a hydroethanolic Cannabis tincture, adding a little Licorice decoction (boiled tea, basically) will help lower the surface tension of the water and stabilise the product. For the most part, any saponin-rich plant can be used. But, Licorice is a pretty amazing plant medicine on its own. And don't believe the scare tactics about Licorice. Cannabis is not the only plant medicine to be attacked by the orthodoxy without rational foundation.

**Edit: What happened to the link? Now it looks like my comment is in response to your position of mayonnaise. 8-)**

That's cool. A friend of mine makes a cup of Cannabis tea when he can't sleep and it knocks him out (mind you, the dude's also a bit of lightweight).

Basically they made a lo-tech version of bubble hash. Physically removed the gland heads then boiled the water off. Cannabinoids are not miscible to any usable degree in water.

Get some bubble bags and do the job right.
