Unveiling of the Pod

Its hard to do the poppy plant poetic justice. Everything about it's appearance is a grand spectacle to the eye. It has a way about itself from the very beginning as a tiny seed, packed with taste and nutrition, to harbor the fondest of memories. From its ordinary accession as a common lettuce-like garden staple to a bluish gray majestic fountainhead sporting bulbous pods fit for the Gods.

Papiver Somniferum, colloquially coined the plant of joy, is documented to be a fairly easy plant to propagate from seed. But what literature fails to document is the care from seedling to its 1 foot cabbage patch companion, is the will to survive the elements. There is a constant need to protect it's innermost precious alkaloids that are intricately pumped through the pod ovaries, that inconspicuously cloth the sepals before making there grand appearance.

Describing the poppy plant with such infectious adjectives like globular, bulbous, glaucous, and saw tooth its no surprise its still worshiped as a go-to backdoor annual chalk full of allure and medicinal value. As the main stem droops to the side, it seems almost frail and damaged to come back a few days later erect - as the sepal breaks away from the pod to showcase its radiating blooms in a variety of soft hues. Yes, the anatomy of this plant can capture the eye of an artist and the person nurturing it ever before impregnating the earth.

One hundred twenty days later, this is what I have to show for the past two seasons that were unsuccessful. Its a small harvest, but the quality of its content is enough to put a smile on my face. To lance or not to lance my fair lady is the question I bestow on my silly wank comrades. I already know the answer, but it doesn't hurt to fantasize.

Oh my, how the 'Hallucinatory Section' has fallen to the waste side.

I lay down home grown poppy pods of beautifying arrangements and no one barks in excitement?

People rather discuss making meth with sudafed pills? Trash talk of that nature is post millennium AOL drivel. Really. No one extracts for Psuedo anymore. It's old news and a rather tedious process - because of the new sanctions LE has enforced on extracting OTC pills.

But, if those pictures didn't ignite a midnight pron boner. Surely, these pods oozing with the delicious aromas of morphine, codeine, and thebaine most likely will.

Throw the memes to the side for a minute. Engage in an artistic conversation. Kids these days with there GIF's, memes, and LMFAO's and 143's.

Well, the time has come. The veil has broken, the petals have fallen off, and the milky encrusted ovary has swollen to the size of a hens egg.

According to literature, it says two weeks after the petals have fallen the pod is ready for harvesting. The harvest can come in the form of three ways: snipping the poppy heads, scoring the pods, or collecting seed. I vouch for lancing the pods.

I know this process is not as resourceful and is a labor of love. But, I am not concern with yields or the amount of labor involved. What matters is collecting a small crude amount of opium for ceremonial purposes.

The sap within is described as a opaque to pink latex that gums and coagulates after lancing. I scored each pod a couple of times and the pod like vessel oozed this salmon colored latex. From what I read the rosier tones of latex exhibit a stronger effect.
