Upstate NY : Deer Issues ?

Hey guys, I'm upstate NY...more specifically wny....I know deer here are freaking everywhere...

There is a bar I used to work at in the burbs, and everyday driving home was like a damn video game trying to dodge all the deer...And yepp, I finally hit one...Or I should say one ran into the side of my vehicle, lol...

One town around here even employs the "Bait & Shoot" program...

Needless to say they are everywhere...

Am I definitely going to have issues with deer ?

Or will I be ok if I plant them in a bushy vegetative area that makes it difficult for the deer to access ?

Those bushy vegetative areas are just what the deer love. Some fencing should do the trick for ya. Also, when you are out there, take a good leak around your plants.

I would try a combo of 7 foot deer fence and repellant spray.

They can definitely be a problem. Here's what I've tried that hasn't worked: peeing around them, stringing fishing line around them, putting deer repellent around them. Then I built my first greenhouse and that did the trick.

I'd go with the tall deer fence.

I have found that deer don't really care much for mj. If your plants are being bothered it is probably because there isn't any other green vegetation other than the pot plants. Usually the deer will chew on the main stalk then leave the plant without consuming any of it. Planting a little later could aleviate the deer problem.

I'm from NY myself and have never had deer bother my plants. I've seen tracks leading up to the plants, but never any damage.

I think it has a lot to do with how much food there is in the area. If there's a lot of farmlands/fields you should be all set, but it never hurts to pee around your spot or put up some fishing line in case.

I stuck a deer bowhunting last year within sight of one of my plants. Like somebody said, I personally haven't had problems and have grown for years in prime whitetail habitat, so long as I waited until everything else had greened up before planting and the plants had some size on them.

buy your neighbor a deer feeder..or saltliks,corn ect...same thing with bugs..give the neighbor a bug zapper..unless you really like them..

what was the bars name? I'm from your neck of the woods and have hit them all up at one point. no longer drink though I did hit a deer sober just last year.

yea like everyone else has said the deer don't seem to bother them much. I have a couple nice holes 5ft from a deer interstate rd. seriously looks like every deer in WNY runs by them but the only thing that I can count on eating them are leafhoppers. have also battled mice and worms that eat into the stalk, both did great damage on separate years.

would rather not say the name of the bar..It is east of Buffalo in the burbs....out that way...on the snowmobile trails.

I was joking really but do know buff well spent lots of life from buffalo to Rochester.

Deer netting enclosing the entire garden is the ONLY thing that has worked for me.
I hate deer.

I would think mothballs would "leach" into the soil...but youre still here after 30yrs lol

I agree with McBride...they like tender shoots(new vegetation)...around here alot of people are eager to get them things out early and they get DOUBLE punished(animals eat them/screws the cycle)

Do they prefer MJ? I dont think so...
But after eating cedar all winter...im sure theyll eat anything thats appears fresh!

That being said....
Ive had pretty good luck with a bar of Ivory soap...shave a lil off with your knife each time you go in to water
ps...I wouldnt use fishing line in the woods...if someone(warden/hiker/plant thief) were to walk into that mess your gig would be up in a hurryyyyyyyy lol

WNY/Buffalo isn't all that big so I wouldn't doubt it....When there is no traffic like at night I can bomb all around the city and the burbs in no time.

You actually spread the mothballs around the perimeter of the grow, not actually at the plant's base. I have used them in the past, but have my reservations about their effectiveness. I know I can smell them from a long way off under the right conditions and so can everybody else.
