Using a 250w MH bulb in a 400w fixture

have a 400w MH fixture. It runs to hot, so I was thinking about getting a 250w bulb for it. I searched Google and couldn't find anything.

Is this do-able? Safe? If the only downside would be slightly lower bulb life that would be cool.

The bulb and transformer and capacitor are all designed to work together at a specific wattage. Even if you get away with it for a while it will just cost you ballast life and is very dangerous as far as being a fire hazard.

Instead look into getting a cooltube and remote ballasting the light. You can even DIY a cooltube with a candle chimney or hurricane glass for under $20.
