Most of the barn grows I have seen have been automated with timers. The important thing is to have a large tank for the generator fuel so that your grow doesn't fail. I did know one guy that went out to the barn and started the generator every morning to get his lights on and then again to shut them off. He was more concerned about the energy savings and wasn't running any equipment when lights were off. It all depends on how married you want to be to the grow.

i will try to find a generator with a timer switch, don't think it will be possible though as you need a key to start them. it's looking like im just gonna have to drag my ass outta bed in the morning.

thanks anyway.

i'm gonna need to keep fans on 24 hours a day, i'll power these with mains electricity and the lights with the generator. i will have to just make sure i'm there for lights on lights off at the same time every day, unless anybody knows of a generator which can start on a timer????

google standby generators, you might be able to wire them to a timer and when power supply is cutoff they come on and produce power.
