Vacuum Sealing Herb?

I recently vaccum sealed some herbs, and I think I did it a tiny bit too early. I did a QP and when I opened the plastic, it stayed compact and would not return to its normal form.

I have not sealed many buds before, but don't they usually return to their normal form? Perhaps I sucked too much air outta it?

I was thinking that I maybe did it a bit early, and some moisture was stuck in there or something?

Let me know your experiences.

I don't vacuum pack weed, but I have vacuum packed everything else and that is definitely a pressure problem. Also vacuum packers are designed to suck gases out and leave liquids in, so I have no doubt there was moisture left. I recommend mason jars, the growfaq has all the info.

I have vacuumed my fair share and one thing to do is make sure there is very little moisture left or the bud will stay compressed and not re-flufs so to speak. As for sending it vacuum sealed "my friend" has done this and with a vaccuum seal, airtight plastic container, and some peanutbutter just to be careful will ensure your package is delivered no problems at least in "my friends" expieriences, I dont recommend doing this though under any circumstances thats fed time ur asking for.

Water boils off to vapor under a vacuum. THe main concept behind freeze drying foods. High vac, and cold temps.

It sounds to me as though you bagged them while they were still wet.

For "shipping:"

1. Put the buds into a ZipLoc baggie. Press most of the air out with your hands, leaving a little air in the bag so the bag won't crush the buds. Wrap two dryer softener sheets around the bag and secure it with a rubber band.

2. Put the first bag into a second ZipLoc baggie and use your Food Saver vacuum sealer to seal it, but not so tight that it crushes the first bag.

3. Get one of those free VCR shipping boxes from the post office.

4. Put your bagged product into the box along with a little bubble wrap.

5. Be sure to NOT use your real return addy.

If you want long-term storage for your buds, Mason Jars can't be beat. This little devise is great for sealing in Mason Jars ... and the price is right too:

Pump and Seal food saver vacuum sealer is better than Tilia FoodSaver

How long do you think buds would last in a mason jar if I put all the jars in a light free box and buried them

i have no personal experience, but i've seen several threads about this before, and once you have it in the jar, and it's cured completely and properly, it's good to go for about as long as you want. i've seen fdd say that he's had one jar stored for about a year. the buds all turn golden in color, and the smoke is supposed to be extremely smooth.

Redd, thanks for the information thats a great idea wrapping the fabric softener around the bag, really swell idea indeed! The padding alone will act as a buffer zone betwen the herb and the sealer.

Only problem with your post, my sealer seals until it decides no air is in fact in it... isn't really up to me. I still think it will work alot better in the way you just stated even if it sucks all the air out.... the buds will be a ton less compact.

Damn. I guess the soup I sealed at work today is now powder. Duh, I'm a dummy.

You honestly believe that all the water is going to boil off in the 30 seconds it takes to vacuum pack? It's not even a perfect vacuum. You need to work on "theory v. application" portion of this exercise. Also, I seriously doubt the temp he is using is anything other than room temperature (burrrr, that's cold).

true. Freeze drying vs vac pack is different.

I work with vacuum systems every day. Just a simple drop of water and the it won't pass a vacuum test.

I'm just saying that water will go to vapor under a vacuum. (simple proven physics) How long you leave it under a vacuum (with a gauge) will determine how much water boils off.

Ever boil water on a stove? Doesn't it go to a vapor state at around 150D F? how come theres still water in the pot at that point?

And WOW! Vac sealed soup at work and it didn't vaporize? Musta been a KILLER vac set up. Near space levels. How many Torr?

Throw a gauge on that bag, and turn off the pump. Watch the gauge. it will rise towards atmosphere. Prove me wrong!

Oh yeah, it's the vacuum of space alright. That mother fucker sucked some dude's eyeballs out last week. Moron.

Agreed big bud, it will cause the water to vapor, but what is being said is that none of us have gauges or HEAVY DUTY industrial vacuum sealers we are merely talking about in ur home vacuum sealers. And i doubt that those will get every bit of moisture out of ur buds if u dont fully dry them before vacuum sealing them. In what i was saying not having dry bud before vacuum sealing would cause the buds to cling together and compress and not fluff back out, our vacuum sealers will not remove all of the moisture from your wet buds...

Do a google of vacuum deposition. I've done over a year of doing that an working on the machines (and that is the tip of the iceberg in optics) And cryogenic pumps, turbo molecular pumps, diffusion pumps, etc. LOL.
Plus years and years of CO2 lasers.

Moron? Coming from you, I can accept that (considering the source). LOL

Wanna talk vacuum theory?

vacum sealing is a great curing option as long as the herb is dry enough. but for shipping that is a great way to do it. but the nugz will always stay compressed. late
