Veggie Competition for Fun

That's nice, I thought you must have a big garden when I saw all those plants, I've never planted anything outside but will hopefully get a garden in a year or two. I haven't got that many plants right now but I'm also giving away some tomato clones and peper plants. I'm growing couple of plants of each vegetable to learn about them. Few months ago I wouldn't know the difference between a peper plant and a cucumber plant

If you have them all outside and is still cold, don't you have some kind of greenhouse or a plastic to protect them ?

i have a GH that they were in when they got to cold. it gets cold inside theri at night still. i should put a small heater on in theri so they can always be out theri though

You should post a picture of the GH if you have the chance did you buy it or made it ?

It must be really cold if it gets that cold in the GH, never heard of anybody having a heating system inside a GH, is that something that people do ?

i will when ican. my cpu has a virus so i am typing this on my ps3 with no key pad so internet use is a bitch to use for me. and yes it is a store bought one . it hasnt been to cold lately so they have been in there for a few days now. and ya they make heater bars for gh's but asmallhouse heaterwould work. veggis dont like the cold.

and deserts you are just in time the comp will just sty opento all who want join nd when they want to join

Well guys and girls looks like we have a good like competition going on with a decent amount of participants!! All of your plants looks absolutely beautiful! Well any ways figure i would shoot a lil update on my tomato that is entered in this comp. Ill let the pics do the talking.

Looks good Penyajo. Which of these three should I go with for the competition?

I don't exactly know what each strain is though. One is called Black Pearl or something like that so that sounds like a good one to do. That is #2. Of the three, which should I go with?

And for pepper, I am going with this Asian Pepper:

Very nice looking tomatoes Penyajo, what kind of watering system is that ? it looks like every pipe is independent from the other ?

Looking good DesertSativa, I've never seen tomatoes as busy as those, they look pretty cool The peper looks good as well, mine didn't split the stem for the first time until the 3th set of leaves and after the first split is splitting every set. Is that a bell peper ?

I wish I could join but I just got some pepper seeds but I have to dry them out first. =(

So here are my Monsters. All Organic! Started from seed first of March 2011. Snow Peas in the Lowes Bucket. You can see at the bottom where the hit the Super Soil (Yes, Subs SS) Everything BURNT to a crisp. But then they took off. Those are 5 ft bamboo poles with about 4ft sticking out. Then there are the Red Cherry Maters. Started out under T5s they grew a lil leggy with thin leaves. But overall very healthy in 16oz party cups. Then they got put into 7gal pots with SS and then took off. Since hardning them off out side and now they sit on the deck. The new growth and leaves are just BURLY. So my tallest is about 49" tall and tons of lil maters growing.

The watering system is a drip line system. I built it my self and would be willing to share some picture with you on how I did it. I will take some today and post them later. I took a 55gal drum put a submersable pump at the bottome using a hose spicket out the side of it running to 3/4 in tubing that is called funny pipe. Out of the funny pipe i ran individual drip lines to each plant and but 1 gallon per hour drippers on each one. With the pressure of the pump it drips more than a gallon a hour so i run it for just about 15 min and that is enough for 2 days.

Thanks for the info sounds good, I build a drip system as well but I did it without a pump. It works and it definitely saved my plants while I was away but it doesn't work as good as I would like to, I have it working one hour a day. I'll probably end up building one with a pump.

Would be nice if you could post some pictures for sure, also do you know the characteristics of the pump ?

you can join after they are started or when ever you want if you still want to in the future.

my CPU has been fixed so an update tonight, they have not grown to much more cuz they are still in 4 inch pots and they need to go in the dirt but i am waiting about another week to be safe from weather.

Well like i said i would post some pics for you guys of the irragation system i have going on. It is kinda ghetto rigged and i used a sub-pump that i just found laying around at work so i really dont have the specs(it is just a small fountain pump). Placed it in a 55 gallon trash can with lid. Put a hose spicket on the side of trash can using a pvc 3/4 in thread fitting and home made rubber gasket. Got a 10ft regular garden hose and hooked it to the funny pipe and made 13 individual drip lines for each plant. this system is nice because i can add more lines as i add more plants. Here are some of the pictures.

love th setup penyajo, simple but very effective. ive been thinking about something like this but dont have xtra money for a pump. i was thinking though if i put a small hoes spicket at the bottom with no pump and the 55 gal drum was full water that when i opened the spicket at the bottom the weight of the water would push water out the spicket with decent pace from the weight of the water above. pretty much its letting gravity do the work. do you think that this might work?

That was actually my main idea but after i had built the resovoir and put it up on those blocks so it was up a bit higher than the hose. Gave it a shot and it kinda failed missurably but I think if you can get the can full if water up about 6' higher than your funny piipe is going to be i am sure that would work. But if you are going to be keeping your res on the ground you will need a sub-pump and a cheap one will put you back about 50 bux

Nice pictures man, thanks from the previous picture it looks like each pipe was coming out of a bucket or something. Have you got the specs of the pump ?

It does work, I've got a reservoir about 3 feet over some plants and it works, just with gravity but you will have to get adjustable drippers because there is not enough pressure for the normal ones. Is it worth it ? It's really hard to adjust the drippers so they give more or less the same amount and sometimes they kind of get stuck so I'd recommend getting a pump because it's not that expensive and the adj. drippers are so much trouble.

Sweet thanks but the down side is that I would probably grow them in hydro because I want fast growth and big fruits. =(

i was just gonna attach a hose to it and water by hand with the hose and have no drip lines, i like to spend as much time as i can in the garden so hand watering lets me play in theri for an xtra 15-30 minutes. thanks for the info though, i think i am going to raise my barrel when it gets light enough and just do that until my irrigation gets turned on.
and i would just buy the pump but if i had the money it would go towards a bunch of other stuff that is very much needed. i do have a pool pump that i could some how convert to pump water out, but it pumps water so dam fast, i think it is like 20 gallons a minute

thats all good man, maybe a down side for us if they grow bigger and faster. but ya its cool man the comp is open to any and all people and ways of growing
