ventillation help

does anyone have any suggestions for how to get some ventillation into a closet that essentially does not have any?
it hasnt been a problem until now, but soon i want to start using a 400 watt hps and i know it will prove to be a very big problem to control the heat without vents. does anyone know how i can get rid of some excess heat?

thanks a lot for any and all suggestions.

Im in the same boat as you vandewalle....I have a cupbard which doesnt have any ventillation... so to try and beat that I have cut 2 holes both sides at the top 1 bigger than the other... Then put 2vents like you get in a bathroom.... Then I am going to put a fan out side blowing cold air in and fingers crossed pushing the hot air out the other side --vent

Does anyone think this should work??

you could try the same...I take it you have a door on your closet? put one vent at the bottom and one vent at the top with a fan blowing in and one at the top blowing out..! could work for ya

yes, but i cant really have vents on the door because it will be seen, and its supposed to be a "hidden thing" just for people that come over not to know.

thanks for the suggestion though, but i was wondering if even a fan would work for keeping the heat down? would that be enough, i open the door at least 2 times a day. if i just have a fan will that be enough?

Are in that case im all out of ideas....my landlords safe and all my freinds know I smoke/will be growing soon

Where is closet? dwn stairs or up? could allways run something up it to the loft...but I would wait for better advice then that

Edit] it could do the job for ya even one at the top blowing the hot air out not many ppl will take much notice of one vent at the top of a door...

hi dudes
im in the same boat as you two
ive just switched to flowering and im using a 250 sont
after 3hrs of being on my temp went upto 32c and i AM using a fan and ive got 10 10mm holes (5 at the top and 5 at the bottom)
what im thinking of doing is cutting a hole the size of a empty toilet roll, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom, and then push the roll in the hole (trying to hide the escaping light) and still using the fan
hopefully this will circulate the air and bring fresh air in and let the hot air out.

Highly unlikely. You need to realise and understand that growing inside is replicating nature and that means giving the plant enough light, water, oxygen, co2, moisture and nutrients to support and sustain growth. If you have a plant inside a cupboard with a fan simply re-circulating stale, co2 spent air for the majority of it's life how do you think it will get on? How would you like it if someone put you in a small room with a fan and only opened the door twice a day to let fresh air in?

Plants require and need proper ventilation and that means changing the air and co2 around the plant leaves about once every 2 or 3 minutes so new c02 rich air can be utilised by the plants growing mechanisms.

Proper ventilation is only one half of the equation, you also need to be aware of and deal with odour problems, particularly in flowering when the plants can fill the whole house with weed smell unless they're correctly ventilated and exhaust air filtered with a charcoal filter or some other means of odour control used.

You don't necessarily need to invest in expensive and sophisticated ventilation systems, it does depend on the size of your growspace and how many air exchanges you use. A simple formula for working this out is to calculate the cubic meterage of your growspace and multiply this by the number of air exchanges per hour. For example a 1.5m H x 1m W x 0.75m D growspace would have a cubic meterage of 1.12cm, to convert into cubic feet you'd multiply by 35, so 39.2 cubic feet. To exchange the air in this space every 2 mins you'd multiply 39.2 by 60/2, 39.2 x 30 = 117.6. So you'd need to look for a ventilation fan that would flow 117.6 cubic feet per minute. 117.6 cfm isn't a particularly high flow rate and a standard bathroom ventilator/extractor would do a reasonable job, but it does have to be ported out of the growspace and ventilation holes provided for fresh air to be drawn in.

i run a 400w hps in my closet, i use a fan to circulate air and blow on my hps, and i have a decent size and cfm pc fan blowing heat into the wall, this works great for me. the door of the closet is not air tight and plenty of fresh air goes through this closet. wire a pc fan to a proper plug like a cellphone charger, trace around it on you're wall and cut the square. then put it in the hole, a high point in the closet is great.

i have air circulating because the door is definately not air tight... basically my only concern is heat and i want to get rid of it. so if thats all i want to do, what is my best solution? thanks for all your help guys, but i cant make any modificiations to the door, and probably not to the closet itself. thanks a lot, ill take a pic later on today.

I did not read the entire thread..

1. you can replace the door knob with a squirrel fan.. very effective.. yet during flowering, your room will wreak like bud...
2. no a fan will not be enough
3. you only need one exhaust fan pulling air out of the room.. freash air will be sucked in (displacement)
4. cut a hole in the ceiling and blow the air into the attic.. or use ducting and carrying the air out of the attic .... outside.. this is very very effective

cheers

as number 4 said.. the only real way is to cut a hole man, that little hole can be fixed real easy.

a hole in the ceiling is awesome. you can pretty much control any heat problem.. but when the plants are flowering, you willl need to make sure the ventilation ducting GOES all the way OUTSIDE.. where there are NO pedestrians... this is KEY! PLANTS ARE SMELLY!!!

You'll have heat issues for sure! Heres what I suggest. Go to your local hardware store and buy a couple of heater vents (grills). Cut hole(s) at top of closet on both sides if you can, and put vents over it to make it appear like a heater vent. Anyone looking at would think its your heating vent. But you'll have smell issues to deal with.

Putting a fan inside with out a vent will only circulate the hot air around in your closet! Not Good!

Just a thought. I also like the idea about the hole in the ceiling with duct running outside.

Good Luck!

Odor varies from strain to strain. You may have a low odor strain going. Wait until you harvest and dry ... you'll have odor then. *lol*

Ok lets say i make a hole w/ computer fan to my attic for ventillation. Could I run the ducting from the fan straight into a carbon filter like this https://www.gardenscure.com/420/security/60127-ryoko-builds-diy-activated-carbon-filter.html or would that back the air up in the closet? Once the air went into the filter, wouldn't it go through the filter into the attic as fresh air & remove heat at the same time? I need to figure out a way to some way ventillate & filter smell at the same time.

You can either suck air in through the filter or blow air out through the filter..it doesnt really matter, i blow air out because theres more room outside my tent then in it for the filter to sit.. BUT... to do this effectively you need to get a fan that is up to the job...you also need to bear in mind that the more ducting you have will mean loss of power in the fan and bends equal loss of power...if you set a fan to blow and put your hand over the end of the ducting....now bend the ducting and see what happens hardly any power...so in conclusion get a fan that is more than good enough for your room(size) and if you can get another fan blowing in while the other one pulls out... happy days..PS My inny fan sucks in the warm air that my filter blows out thus cost effective low humidity at lights off..
