Water

Sooooo i know we shouldnt use clear pots but i have covered the sides and part of the bottom so that no light can get to the roots. Is this ok?

I also want to be able to see the bottom so that i know when my girls are thirsty. when there isnt moisture on the bottom, i know it is time to water.

What are your thoughts on this?

Why not just use a moisture stick. If your plants are vegging, you only need to water when they start to droop a little. In flower have a pattern, like every 2 days. I personally wouldn't use clear pots.

lift the plants after a watering, and remember their weight. then lift them up couple days later. if they are really light, time to water. everyones been using this method since the caveman days of growing. lol ill warn you tho, lifting a fully grown, flowering plant in a 5 gal pot can get heavy. :)

You don't need to see the roots to tell if they need watering. Roots should not be in contact with light. As DemonTrich said, lift the pot and see if it's light. Plants that still have water in the medium r heavy. You can also stick your fingers in the soil and feel the medium. It should be completely dry on top and down an inch. Water every other day and if it seems waterlogged let it go another day without watering, no problem
