welding glass

Is it possible to weld glass pieces together? I'm not talking about mason jars and windows, but pipe glass (mostly Pyrex?). I have a broad tipped propane torch, mapp gas, and oxy/acetylene torches, both regular and jewelers setups. I also have an assortment of broken stems,pipes,ash catchers,etc. I'm going off assumptions here, but im assuming if i heat the whole piece, either with the propane, or ill have a bonfire, i can use the jewelers torch to fuse the glass together to make myself some custom pieces out of my junk? Ive repaired and made a couple glass nails, but that's just a matter of heating and stretching the glass. Why does it seem glass work is such a protected trade, there just isn't much info out there on it.

Their are whole message boards for glass workers..don't really get what your asking ofcourse you can melt the glad together but the glass has already been annealed so it will be easier to cause cracking....plus you would need to clean the glass really well, for the price of glass you really should just throw out old broken pipes not worth trying to raise from the dead

You would need to preheat the glass to 1000 degree (kiln) and have a torch hot enough to melt the thick glass correctly (not what you have).
Then you would have to cool it slow enough it wouldn't crack (kiln)

talkglass is a great source for start up info. You would need equipment to start though.
Propane AND oxygen torch
kiln or fiber blanket for cooling

that torch might melt something small inconsistently. But won't melt a 4mm thick tube.

dankshizzle, i don't think you read my post, i have an assortment of torches.. i know my oxy/actyl gets upward of 6000degF. I didnt really consider id need to slow cool it. Im figuring my welding gloves and welding blankets can support the hot work.. i got nothing but time right now..i guess ill go play with it..nothing to lose, its already broken. ill check out that sit., thanks.

Depending what you make you can get away without a kiln..I knew a pro glass blower and he would cool bowls without a kiln but every one in a while he would have one crack..try to let it cool by the work spot where its warm or I bet you could throw the oven on one something lol not sure you would have to look that up...glass is tricky when its melted you have to get a feel for it and be very careful not to cut yourself and obviously burn yourself. Good luck actually making anything good unless you keep practicing! Its hard! Always hold the glass with your hands closest to you so the heat glances downward not up at your hands..Idk let us know how it goes lol

Welding glass is use during welding. It protects us from the flames of welding.

Being a glass blower you need a glass torch most likely it crack in the kiln heating up if you don't put in a kiln and straight to a torch I guarantee it will just shader
