What determines sex?

For starters, if this does not belong in the advanced section I apologize, but it didn't seem like a question that most people on here would be able to answer. Not at all to bash the intelligence of my fellow RUIers, I just mean most people on here are concerned with and put their mental energy towards the horticultural aspect of cannabis and not the specific biological aspect.

I've been thinking about this recently and haven't been able to find an answer. You can pick up just about any how-to book on MMJ cultivation and find a section on how to increase your male to female ratio. Limiting stress, manipulating the photoperiod, whatever.

However, if you take a basic punnet square illustration of sexual heredity, you end up with a 50% to 50% probability of inheritance. It seems like this would negate any of these claims, unless the punnet square does not apply. At the same time some species of plants do react to stress by limiting certain types of flowers. though I have seen a stronger case for this working against hermaphroditic flowers in species other than cannabis. Also, as we all know, many female plants will produce a small number of male flowers if the right hormones are triggered, meaning they do already have the capacity to create these parts.

So what I am wondering is: Is sex determined at the creation of the zygote? Is the punnet square even relevant to this subject? If not either of these, what exact processes in the plant determine it? I know all of the supposed methods, I'm just wondering why they actually work, if they in fact do.

Thank you whoever takes the time and has the knowledge to answer this.

Okay so the plant sex is determined before it shows sex, and it will only show opposite sex parts if it is originally determined to be a hermie, OR if it intersex because of a shortening photo-period? Thank you for clearing this up for me.
