What if I want seeds and clones?

First of all, please be honest and come right out and say, "you're a dumbass", if that's what you think. I'm am big boy, and won't take it personally, as long as you don't take a "FU, but thanks" response personally. Deal? :)

I am a small-scale hobbyist grower, and always will be unless there are some major legal changes in my state.

I'm just finishing up a successful first grow (autos). For my next grow, I would like to grow photos and produce some seeds and female clones.

My thought is to start 5 regular seeds, hope to grow 1 male (opposite day) and female to maturity, and produce seeds. Take clones from non-buddy branches of the female and make clones to grow out. Pretty much using the seeds as a backup plan in the event something goes terribly wrong with the clones or a grow.

I guess I am trying to become self sufficient without having to constantly order seeds. Being a hobbyist, who knows, maybe I will try crossing some strains down the road.

Good idea, bad idea, advice?

My own worthless opinion is do it if you have the slightest interest. Ownership has it's privileges. I love learning trying new things simply because I want to.

A little confused about what you mean by take clones from non buddy branches?
I'm sure you rolly mean take clones
before the plant is in full flower?

So grow out male and save pollen? Take clone and then paint pollen on female to make seeds?

Or are you trying to bang out seeds same grow?

that's called growing perpetual, and it's really the smart way to grow once you find a good strain that you want to grow and clone and keep growing..
you just have to learn how long and how far to space out the clones long enough to get them into the flowering room.. if you time it right, you could have fresh bud every week or so if you've got the space for it..
if you had an 8 week strain for instance, you'd just take clones, let them room for how ever long, then put one to flower once a week, and as the older plants gets harvested, you replace her with a new clone.. you'd be replacing the oldest plant once a week so you'd always have a fresh plant to harvest after it's 8 weeks of flowering.. idk if i am describing this right or not though tbh, lol..

Good idea. Better idea is to get collidial silver and spray branch of female, she will produce pollen then pollinate another female plant.

Feminized seeds. That's is you don't want males in the future.

Yes, that's correct. I would be taking clones before full flower, but would like to take clones from a for sure female and not play a guessing gender game with the clones.

Technically it would be perpetual, just with some longer gaps in between full grows. :)

Clones from clones or a mother before I was ready for a full grow. Not looking at producing huge quantities. I have enough to last me for quite a while from my first grow.

I am confused here. How is it that by taking clones from a plant going to guarantee a male for collecting pollen? Would you not have to do what Mr.CannaCole mentioned by using liquid silver......? Please - I'm not advising this, just asking myself as well out of courteousness. I mean, what if all the clones become females....you would of just wasted a lot of time...no?....?

I thought he was planting seeds then hoping for a breeding male and female
and taking cuttings from the female.

The only problem I see is that just using the first male and female is not exactly being selective but he said it was just in case anything happened.
He would have to pheno hunt

Correct. Sorry if what if the OP is confusing. Plant regular not feminized seeds, hope to have at least 1 male for pollen. Not pheno hunting, just would want seeds for a backup, and not have to order them in the future unless I wanted a different strain. Not too concerned about the produced seeds being male or female, as I could weed out the males like most people do when using non-feminized seeds.

Take clones off of not yet pollinated female.

Maybe it makes no sense at all. I don't know. I would think 1 fully pollinated female would produce enough seeds to last me for a long time. I guess I hope that someday, seed swapping might be a regular thing.

IMHO, with a small setup you should clone your favorite plants and keep growing them but don't bother making seeds if you can get commercial ones. With limited space I don't waste my time growing any seeds that aren't made from an elite cut female and a carefully selected male. That's what you're getting when you buy good commercial seeds, my own seeds would be basically a random male + female. Breeding is all about selection and growers everywhere are selecting females by cloning and trading the best ones, the so called "elite cuts." You want one of those cuts but for whatever reason you're growing from seed so you at least want a seed made from one of them. Good males are found by taking the time and effort to pollinate multiple great females, grow out the seeds, and noting which ones tend to produce the best buds. Think about how many plants and how much time you would have to expend with your setup if you wanted to find a male that was better than average? There are some seeds out there that are actually "bred" over multiple generations and such but most are just elite cuts hit with one of the breeders studs. Those have a better chance of producing a keeper than one of those random seeds crossed with another random seed (your seeds!)

You make a lot of sense officer, but I guess I'm not trying to get that technical. As stated in the OP, this is just a hobby and will be nothing more unless there are some drastic changes.

I'm a natural born optimist. Maybe I take a clone off my best female and breed her. I could end up with the best bud ever... for me. :)

Edit: I wasn't going to be attempting to cross any strains at this time. I don't have the experience for that... yet.

Hey Mr.WDIK, Hobby it is, so have fun an experiment. Here is a video that a friend of mine had tried with great success :

He Got his male from this and didn't have to guess or worry about a Hermmie gal/dude (lol) and collected a shit load of pollen. Your right, you will be amazed on how many seeds will come off one single plant. Hell he has seeds for years to come. Not sure on best way to store them, heard so many totally different things on that subject but maybe someone here could shed light on it if you decide to try it. Plus, make sure you wait long enough for ( ALL ) the pollen sacks to open and collect so you don"t waist any. Plus make sure you wait to collect the seeds at the correct time and not to early. Sorry, I am sure you already know this...it's just I saw my buddy doing this for the first time and it was a struggle since he didn't do his homework too well. Good luck Bro.....like to see your progress/pics later on and stuff.......... PEACE :peace:

It's not dumb.....

This is what I did, I got sick of being ripped off, so I bought some of the best, most expensive crap I could get from this ASSHOLE that kept ripping me off... To get back at him, I looked at my wife and said, "Ok enough, we're getting a 400 watter and growing our own..." So I took some seeds from his MOST EXPENSIVE stuff,( that had seed), and planted..... Then I supplied myself for about 6 months out of the year, and then went back to him to get some "more stuff", this time he had a different variety, that was ALL seeded up...

So to get a hybrid, I grew a male of this new variety and a female of the original strain I had bred for seed(because I didn't have seeds originally either, so had to use what was available from this guy)

End result is, I have some beautiful BEAUTIFUL girls, that throw off a extra pair of leaves out of the center of leaf junctions. They are a mostly indica variety and start to finish in about 90 days.

Just every now and then make sure you back breed so that you get a solid consistent yielding variety.

Ohh and at the end of it all??? 5 years later, I don't buy weed from ANYONE anymore. Nor do I sell it. =) I've removed myself completely from the market and can't be happier for it.

I was doing everything from seed because I suck at cloning. Then I bought an ez cloner and followed the directions to a T, now I have the confidence it takes and believe I could clone you and me and my dog.

Starting to think the colloidal silver method that others have mentioned may be the way to go. Grow 2 fem plants, spray one.

12-12 from seed or after 2 weeks of veg if I'm just wanting to make a quick seed run?
