What light should I buy

That depends much more on your system of growing than it does on the price of power. If you're running a sealed room, you need to take power consumption of your climate control system- and attendant savings on the switch- into account.
True.

But for a simple homegrow with one light, it can take quite a while to reach several hundred dollars of electricity saving.

Not if you count cooling savings as well. It's hard to run a 1000 in a 4x4 area. Alot easier to run 500 watts of cob in there. How many harvests would it take to make up the diffrence of what a 400 can produce vs a 1000? Payback period less than 3 months

Or days, depending on your setup.

Remember also that it's a BETTER quality of light, not just more efficient than HID. This should translate to bigger, better buds- grower notwithstanding- and therefore will accelerate the usual ROI calculations dramatically.

I'm stuck with a pile of HID lights right now, myself- one might say if have a vested interest in sticking with the tech- but I know better.

Weed is getting cheaper, fast. In a year or two it will be too cheap to grow with HID and the efficiency of LED will be the price of entry.

Why do you come to the led threads everyday if you hate them so much. No one wants to read the vomit you spew daily. Just stop
I don't hate LED's I actually like them, I have 5 different kinds of LED's but they are not as cost effective as HID lightining. Grow the same bud and cover a lot less area and cost a lot more so until they can lower those prices per square foot I will continue to recommend HID.

1kw HPS covers at least a 5x5 area, 500 watts of COBs will need ventilation you will need like forever to recover electrical costs and it will be hard to match yields. You guys must have some expensive electrical costs, here in Colorado they are some of the lowest in the nation and even offer options to buy more power with a solar and wind power option through the local power supply company which will even further lower your electrical bill. I know some places here running 40 one thousand watt duel ended HPS , now that's an electric bill!

"Its like throwing away money" Its not anything like that. You defend technology that is unaplogetically inefficient and anachronistic. Your reasoning is laughable. No one should buy a new corvette because next years will be better? HID can never be better than LED already was.
I said it already: you are a nit wit. Top quality led surpasses top quality hid in efficiency by nearly 50%.
Stick with games and game playing your analogies reveal the thoughtless dogma behind your nonsensical comments.
Why get so bent out of shape when someone tryes to rebuttal any opinion? Its my opinion and its not like i said LEDs suck but i do have a valid point! Now we cant have a discussion with out name calling?

Why cant i post my point of view? This is a forum for discussion of different opinions.
And i never said i hate LEDz.

But you would have to buy a new one.
No I wouldn't. Just like the man above said about Corvettes; the one you have is still a step up, you don't need a new one to remain better.

Sometimes manufacturers and even whole industries get the next tech improvement wrong, and the old stuff is better than the latest and 'greatest'.

Even at current pricing, COB LED is very serious competition indeed for nearly every other lighting type now available. As the price comes down, HID will become indefensibly obsolete.

i like to hear everyone's pov. i'm just saying man you bring negativity with your pov. you said "may as well get cfls". you know thats not true. these always go off topic by people who want to bash. the guy just wants some suggestions for a light

Once I can get a ~500w equivalent for a under 2 hundo, I'm in.
That's just cost of entry, and it's for just your special case. Most buyers run larger operations, and so operating, maintenance, repair and required ancillary equipment costs such as climate control all get factored in.

All the above is not to say you don't have a point- sometimes, cost of entry is THE deciding factor.

in the meantime keep that heater cranken
Even then, you can still turn lemons into lemonade; my chiller comes inside from the windowsill every October and has for four years now. It sits on a table in my office with the window cracked as the whole house air intake. The chiller heats that cold incoming air and it then passes through the house, keeping it warm. Even when it's -10f outside. 'FREE', because my HID powered op has to shed that excess heat anyway!

I don't use any AC and its 68 in the closet right now. I just have 1 small exhaust fan and air is passively pulled in from the bottom of the closet.

I'd need 1 fan even with LEDs to keep fresh air coming in
Quite. In your case the 400 HPS clearly makes sense, but it takes a lot of tent growers to match one commercial op.

We're not talking about corvettes ok where talking a bout having good medicine and be able to produce it at cost efficient way and still yeilding the maximum. So no your analogies make no sense.

Also testicles answer is to just turn up the heat?? Thats not much efficiency.
