What To Do With Moldy Hash?

So I got some hash last month, right at 185g when I received it. Now this is African hash, not bubble or ice-o-lator quality by any means, but still decent mids hash for bargain-basement prices. Due to extreme transportation conditions, poor packaging, and the fact that it was just made and still fresh, one of the cakes was moldy when I opened the bag (See pics 1 and 2). I immediately separated it from the others and shaved off the complete outside layer with a knife, trashing about 4-5g of that cake. The others all appeared to be fine, but since they had been in the bag together I knew they had to be covered in mold spores, so I brushed them all off fairly aggressively with a stiff toothbrush, again trashing all of that.

The moldiest one was put in a brown paper bag, in its own tupperware from day 1.

The other cakes were left on the window sill to dry out for 3 days, then put in a paper bag in the closet for about a week, then in a tupperware. I had hoped this much drying out (they lost ab 10g) would kill the mold, but when I opened it today to get some out I noticed one cake had a spot of mold. I broke it open to find that it was pretty well completely saturated in mold- nice yellow and blue band through the middle 50% of the cake (see pics 3-5).

What should I do? I obviously separated it but I really don't want to just trash 50-100g of hash, and I'm not going to sell it or even give it away if it could make you sick. I thought about making tincture with all of the affected hash; anybody know if 95% Everclear will kill the mold and make it consumable?

Sorry to read this, I would just let them dry. I say save what you can. What ever you are keepig them in, is allowing moisture and that is causing the mold. I say remove the moldy ones and let the others dry out and then if you want to try to cure them somehow do that. But the biggest worry at this point is just saving the hash.

I recentlt had a simular problem with hash that wasnt refined as well as it should have been & had small leaf particles in the cake that turned moldy after an employee stored it in a glass inspection canister & we ended up saving most of the product.

First we cut away the visable mold as you did, next we cut up the cake into small chunks that looked about a gram or so,then we put all the chunks on a drying rack inside a modified storage locker that resembles a grow box/locker.

Next we put one of our smallest ozone generators ( ozn jr) inside the can & left the locker sealed for about 36 hours,we have a mold test kit on site & we tested several chunks of the product twice a week for about 2 weeks & no mold,we then put all the chunks into a glass canister with an air tight lid for 3 or 4 days then re tested several more chunks,no mold showed up.

We listed the hash as sunstandard product & put a little sign next to it informing patrons that the product was treated for mold & sold it all at $7 a gram,we went through over 60 grams in a week with no complaints and had several repeat buyers.

Keep in mind that if you do salvage the product and sell it be sure to warn buyers that it tested positive for mold before treatment, anybody with any upper respitory problems could potentialy get fuked up .

We ordered a moisture meter probe from Granger construction supply so our buyer can test all incomming product for moisture percentages before taking in any more overages from unknown caregivers,we got lucky so hopefully the system we used will work fot you as well.

Thanks for being a honest person & not just passing off rancid product, good luck to ya & Be sure to post your results .

thanks for all the replies guys. it is a shame to lose it, but what are you gonna do

Panhead, I'll prob do the same as you did and hope to save as much as possible. It is much less refined than any other hash I've seen and does have small plant particles in it so I'm sure that's what happened. Will post pics once it's dried out a bit

you could still give it away or sell it. just be honest and tell them it had mold, give a discount. i had some very low quality hash last year. only like 15 grams. took me a while to sell but it still went.

i would dry ti out as much as possible and keep trying to remove the mold. put a dehumidifier in the room even maybe. i dont think there is a way to get rid of it. there are probably too many spores all over through out it. you could probably put it in a freezer to stop it from reproducing. but it wont kill it.

Anybody know if after drying it thoroughly, would I be safe making hash oil or tincture with it? That is, would the butane/ ethanol kill the mold?

I'm not running a dispensary or anything. I would just be giving it away/ selling it cheap to friends; really kinda bought it just for the novelty of having a shit ton of african hash, and I wouldn't even give away something that I knew could possibly get someone extremely sick. Just kind of goes against my ideals that cannabis should be implicitly safe for anyone :weed:

I have heard with moldy buds you can run it with butane in an extractor and get a smokable product, I've personally never tried it, try searching for a topic on it. Goodluck
