They staet to swell in the final few Weeks, but you need to use a ripening formula like powder kool bloom or something. It also depends on the strain! Post some pics and we can tell what's going on.

depends on strain and the environment. For me about 6-7 weeks old is when the swelling starts.

Here's some pics of my platinum bubba week 7 in superponics (mix of top feed dwc and ebb) I have them on technaflora recipie for success. It seems to be working as advertised. I've got some light burn going on cuz my grow is so small. Running a 400w hps now switched the spectrum to 250w SL. Buds are starting to ripen and I was wondering if anyone thinks the buds will swell more? Also I have a small white fly problem and keeping a fan on the plants seems to be keeping them under control. I'm hoping my plants can just ride it out until harvest which is about 12 days away at the earliest probly. What should I do with burnt top leaves? Leave em? Chop em off? First time grow for me I'm keeping it pretty casual with the spraying and extra chemicals here's some pics

You don't need to use a "ripening formula" That is just marketing puffery.

Just feed the plant the nutrients it needs, provide a proper environment and they will ripen just fine.

IME, at 6 weeks or so plants stop new growth and start to swell. This continues for the next 2-4 weeks until they are ready for harvest.
